this Roman Republican silver denarius was found in the Hallaton treasure hoard. It was struck in Rome before the Roman general Scipio defeated Hannibal and could have been made as far back as 211 BC, which would make it one of the oldest coins found in Britain.

The coin depicts the goddess Roma on one side and the twins Castor and Pollox on galloping horses on the reverse.

The presence of a Roman coin of this antiquity in Iron Age Leicestershire is strong evidence for the exchange of goods between the region and Rome, through trade and diplomacy, before the Roman conquest.

At a time when so many researchers and students are working remotely, it may be helpful to make use of various online sites and databases. Among these is the Reception of Classical Texts Project, hosted by The Open University. The website contains material on the Reception of Greek Drama and Poetry, mainly in English , from c. 1970 to 2005. There is a searchable database of performances of Greek plays, with comments on staging, translations, adaptations etc, plus a number of critical essays focusing on the use of modern sources and a selection of project publications.

The site is free to access and use.
