Today we're thrilled to be joined at ThinkTank by a group of young learners for the second of this year's Home Education Events! Led by our fab Space Advocate Dave, our youngsters will be having fab morning of space science discover including the chance to build and launch paper rockets, along with exploring our hands-on activity stations. Today we're thrilled to be joined at Techniquest by a group of young learners for the first of this year's Home Education Events! "Our child has developed his knowledge and personal growth in such a positive way. He has gained not only new life skills, he has also gained new friends."

This summer we welcomed 80 students, aged 7-16, to the National Space Centre for three-day Summer Space Clubs. Activites ranged from creating dinosaur space agencies, to creating extremophiles, and designing exoplanets where life could find a way.

Our Space Clubs are designed to help improve young people’s confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as well as their science knowledge. We work closely with The National Space Academy to deliver the Space Commanders Club (Ages 14-16). This helps us support the children's long-term educational aspirations, and encourage them into career pathways in STEM subjects.

Huge thanks to Randal Foundation for supporting our Community Engagement Programme, which helps us deliver meaningful projects like this that make a real difference, changing the lives of those who take part.

As you may know, we're headquartered at the National Space Centre - and we're thrilled to share about an exciting activity happening there soon:

"On 20 September the Space Centre will be taken over by the UK in Space Festival. We're excited to be joined by scientists and space experts from across the UK. We'll also have hands-on activities, citizen science projects, talks from experts including our keynote speaker Dallas Campbell, planetarium shows, a chance to explore the National Space Centre’s galleries and more."

🍂🔭 The National Space Academy Monthly Space Update is Here! 🚀

As we head into autumn, the night sky will not disappoint. Our latest monthly blog rounds up the biggest spacecraft news and the best things to look out for in the skies this September.

🌍 Spacecraft News: JUICE Earth Flyby
This month, ESA's JUICE spacecraft will make a close flyby of Earth, passing within just 9,000 km of our planet to gain a gravity assist on its epic journey to Jupiter.
Launched in April 2023, JUICE is heading to the Jovian system, where it will study the icy moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa, worlds that may harbour subsurface oceans and potentially the conditions needed for life. It is also set to become the first spacecraft to orbit a moon other than our own when it enters orbit around Ganymede in 2034.

✨ In the Night Sky:
Keep an eye out for the International Space Station throughout the first half of September. From Leicester, there may be opportunities to spot the largest artificial satellite as it glides overhead like a bright star moving quickly across the sky.

🌑 11 September: New Moon
The new moon brings some of the darkest skies of the month, making it the perfect opportunity for stargazing and hunting for deep-sky objects with a telescope or binoculars.

Heading back to school? Why not start the new term with a great book?

We had originally planned to bring our Space to Read Challenge to a close, but with children returning to school and gaining access to their school libraries again, we've decided to keep it running for a little longer!

To help inspire your next read, we're delighted to share a video from Abi Way, a design engineer and former Airbus placement student who became the first student with a significant visual impairment to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Product Design Engineering from Queen's University Belfast.

As part of our Find Your Space careers series, Abi talks about some of the books that inspired her interest in engineering, problem-solving and discovery.

Her recommendations show how reading can open doors to new ideas, new opportunities and even future careers.
