Not every student starts university the same way.
Some students enter directly into Year 1.
Others take a Foundation programme or pathway route before progressing to a degree.
What matters is not where you start, but whether the route you choose helps you reach your goal.
Foundation pathways can provide an opportunity for students who need additional academic preparation before progressing to university study.

"My father wanted me to be a doctor."
When Bozoma Saint John shared this during a webinar I recently watched, it made me pause.
As parents, we often have dreams for our children. We want them to be successful, secure, and respected. Sometimes, that leads us to imagine a particular career path for them.
But what if their greatest strengths lie somewhere else?
Bozoma didn't become a doctor. Instead, she built an extraordinary career in marketing and leadership and became one of the most influential businesswomen in the world.
One thing she said that stayed with me was:
"You have to champion yourself."
As someone who works with students and families every day, I've seen how important it is for young people to understand their strengths, interests, and potential before choosing a course or career.
Choosing the right university course isn't about following someone else's expectations.
It's about finding the path that allows you to thrive.
Parents guide.
Students discover.
The best outcomes happen when both work together.
π¬ What career did your parents hope you would pursue? Did you follow that path, or choose a different one?

Recently, I've noticed more students asking whether studying in the UK is still worth the investment.
The conversation is increasingly moving beyond university offers and rankings.
Students are looking at employability, student experience, career opportunities and long-term outcomes.
The Whatuni Student Choice Awards are judged entirely by students, and this year De Montfort University was ranked the 5th best university in the UK by postgraduate students.
For many students, what happens after graduation matters just as much as gaining admission.

I had two separate conversations today with students who felt that studying in the UK had become too expensive.
It reminded me that choosing a university is not only about receiving an offer.
Students should consider tuition fees, living costs, accommodation, travel and whether their overall study plan is sustainable from start to graduation.
A realistic plan today is often better than an ambitious plan that becomes difficult to maintain later.
The right university is not always the most expensive one.
