As parents, we often look at grades as the main indicator of how our children are doing at school. However, the early signs of academic struggle are rarely found on a report card.

More often, they appear in everyday moments.

Their confidence starts to change
A child who once enjoyed learning may begin saying things like "I'm not good at Maths" or "I'm just not clever enough."
When confidence decreases, children are often less willing to ask questions, attempt challenging tasks, or participate in class. Confidence and academic progress are closely linked, and a loss of confidence is often one of the first signs that a child may need additional support.

Homework becomes a source of frustration...
Every child finds certain topics challenging, but if homework regularly leads to tears, avoidance, arguments, or excessive stress, it may indicate that they are struggling to fully understand key concepts.
Children who feel overwhelmed often begin to associate learning with frustration rather than achievement.

They seem to be working hard but making little progress
Some children put in a great deal of effort but still feel stuck. This can happen when there are small gaps in understanding that gradually become larger over time.

These gaps are not always obvious, but they can affect confidence, motivation, and overall performance in the classroom.

The important thing to remember is that needing support is completely normal.
Every child learns differently, develops at their own pace, and faces challenges along the way.
The sooner concerns are identified, the easier it is to help children regain confidence, strengthen their understanding, and enjoy learning again.

Dice are a fun and easy way to help children practise maths skills, counting, number recognition, addition, subtraction, times tables, and problem solving through games and activities.

Using dice encourages children to stay engaged, take turns, think quickly, and build confidence while learning through play. Parents can use them for quick learning games at home, homework support, or making revision more interactive and enjoyable.

Did you know you can also have dice that have digits more than 6? Or even blank dice where you can write your own digits on! Which means this activity can also be suitable for the older children.

Sometimes the simplest resources can make the biggest difference in helping children enjoy learning and grow in confidence.

Today, Reena is sharing one of her favourite simple learning tools for children at home and in the classroom, mini whiteboards. They are a great way for children to practise spellings, maths, handwriting, and problem solving without the pressure of making mistakes on paper.

Mini whiteboards encourage children to have a go, build confidence, and stay engaged during learning. Parents can use them for quick learning activities at home, revision practice, or even making homework a little more interactive and enjoyable.
