Founded in September 2011, we are a new society seeking to provide a platform for student-led freethought on campus and locally.

FLASH is a society at the University of Leicester for freethinkers, atheists, secularists, humanists and anybody else who thinks belief should be based on logic & empirical evidence. Freethinking, to us, is an inclusive term. So whether you're an atheist, secularist, Humanist, agnostic, skeptic (with a k!), rationalist, 'Saganist', Naturalistic Pantheist, ignostic or just interested in finding out

Dear Members,

With great regret, we must inform you that FLASH is no longer going be a union-affiliated society due to lack of funding and active membership. We will however still encourage any student freethinking group and if any of you wish to take over and build the society back up to it’s former glory later in the year, we will of course support you. We will keep the Facebook Group and Page running in their current form and keep meeting as an informal discussion group in The Old Horse on Monday evenings.

Leicester has a long and illustrious history of secularism showcased by the Leicester Secular Society who meet every Sunday at Secular Hall; their calendar can be found at http://www.leicestersecularsociety.org.uk/calendar/month.php. Skeptics in the Pub also meet on the third Tuesday of the month and their scheduled events can be found at http://leicester.skepticsinthepub.org.

To those of you who have lent us support since our founding, we thank you. Please help us make sure this is not the end of secularism at the University of Leicester.

All the best,

The FLASH team.

We’re about to start our first talk of the year! We hope to see you there :)

Hey,

Our first meeting of the year will be this Monday (7th October) at 6:30pm and will be a History of Secularism in Leicester by Ned Newitt from the Leicester Secular Society.

This will be held in Fielding Johnson South Wing, Ogden Lewis Seminar Suite 1. If you don’t know where the venue is, I will be waiting outside the front of the David Wilson Library from 6:15 to show you where to go; you can tell it’s me because I have a silly moustache!

Afterwards we will have time to get to know each other in a friendly and open environment.

This is a completely free and open talk and we welcome everybody to come along; so if you have any friends you think would be interested, be sure to invite them to come too.

Hey guys,

Freshers Fair is coming up next Monday and Tuesday. Since I am now a fourth year I have very little time available to run the stall, especially on Tuesday. Please, if any of you can commit a few hours to help man the stall it would really be appreciated.

Thanks a bundle!

Priority will be given to paid FLASH members, but we will be operating on a first-paid, first-served basis for booking spots on this trip.

If you have any questions about the trip you can contact Jared for more information.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hi Everyone!

Just to let you all know, there will be a general meeting tomorrow (Saturday 3rd November) at 12 noon in The Loaded Dog on London Road (Directions: http://tinyurl.com/bevdu82) . This will be an informal session to help work out what you want from the society in the next year, discuss talks to be held up until the Christmas break and generally air any concerns you have to the committee. If you are unable to make this session, then please feel free to get in touch with us by posting a public or private message on this Facebook group, which we have just re-opened to member contributions.

We will be putting out details of next week's talk shortly after this meeting.

Importantly, we would like members of the society who have not yet paid membership and would like to continue to be part of the society to please let us know as soon as possible, again by messaging us on Facebook or by paying your outstanding membership in person by attending tomorrow's meeting.

Hi Everybody,

This Thursday is the next meeting of FLASH, and in all honesty this might be our most important meeting to date. This week's talk will be on "Moral Relativism and the Student Experience" and will be held in Secular Hall at 6:30pm tonight (November 1st). We will be holding a walking bus to Secular Hall for anyone who doesn't know where it is, a committee member will meet you in the Attenborough LG10 (Seminar room in the basement) and there will be a walking bus from here at 6pm to Secular Hall. If you want to make your own way there, here are the directions from Campus; Secular Hall is on 75 Humberstone Gate, LE1 1WB.

"Moral Relativism and the Student Experience"

David accommodateesident of FLASH, will lead a discussion on morality in student society, how this has evolved over time, the unique "experimental" nature of the student experience in terms of its drinking and substance use culture, attitude towards relationships and how these attitudes are looked upon by wider society - And most importantly, are we as students instigators of moral change in that society. As usual this will be followed a group discussion and a trip to the pub to continue things over a pint.

We understand this is a busy time for many of our members but we strongly encourage everyone to attend this session as union rules dictate we need to record our membership. We have changed our meetings to Thursday nights to better accomodate people's schedules and we hope this will help increase attendance.

It is important that we collect records of payment to the society to submit to the students union, otherwise the society's funding may be cut. This would be a serious blow to the society and it is of great importance we validate our records by the close of this week.

If you have already paid your membership, please let us know. If not, or if you would like to join, please let the committee know by replying to this email or attending tomorrow nights meeting.

We hope that we can count on your support to keep the debate alive.

Many Thanks,
FLASH Committee.
