Yesterday I was live on BBC Radio Leicester, talking about being named a finalist for the BBC Make a Difference Awards β Active category. π
What lights me up isn't the award itself β it's what it represents. The chance to reach more people, from every background, all over the world, and help them overcome their fear of water, learn to swim, and in some cases, save their own lives. That's the heart of everything I do through Unity Swimming and Swim Fearless.
Missed me yesterday? I'll be live again tomorrow morning from 7am on the BBC Radio Leicester Breakfast Show with Ady Dayman, broadcasting on location. Listen free, live, on BBC Sounds β https://share.google/y6v8X50ZvLdykgL0I

I've been reluctant to make this post, because I'm not a man, but Brothers, I've had too many conversations with you, both Black and Asian men, for me not to say something. π
The myth I keep hearing: "I can stand up, so I'm fine, if my kids get in trouble, I'll just get in and help." That's not how it works. When an untrained person jumps in to save someone, it usually turns one person in trouble into two and both drown.
Jay-Z didn't learn to swim until he was 42 because his daughter Blue Ivy was born, and he couldn't bear the thought of not being able to help her. I've spoken to a Muslim man who plays every sport, travels the world for sport, but swimming is the one thing his whole family avoids.
Here's the reality: 37% of the people who drowned in the UK in 2024 never even intended to enter the water. They were walking. Running. Passing by. (Source: National Water Safety Forum, WAID 2024)
And to the men who tell me " I just sink, I will never be able to float" that's a myth that Black people can't float. It's about body type and technique, not skin colour or race, and it is entirely teachable. I can show you how to float and how to find your float.

"Why do I always run out of breath?"
Because you're holding it, not using it.
Most swimmers hold their breath underwater, then panic-gasp when they surface. That's the exact opposite of what your body needs. Proper aquatic breathing means breathing OUT underwater, slowly and continuously, then only lifting your head to breathe IN. No holding. No gasping.
Once you get this rhythm going, out underwater, in above, your breathing becomes controlled instead of chaotic. That's what lets you swim for longer without that panicked, out-of-breath feeling creeping in.
𫧠Breathe OUT underwater β slow and steady
π Lift to breathe IN β no holding, no gasping
π Rhythm = the key to swimming further
ππΎββοΈ Controlled breath = calm swim, not a chaotic one

Panic Mode & Fight, Flight or Freeze
Your panic in water isn't weakness. It's cave-time survival wiring.
When breathing goes into panic mode in water, that's fight, flight or freeze taking over. Your brain isn't trying to make you happy β it's trying to keep you safe, and it's using instructions written thousands of years ago.
This response is completely normal. Your body doesn't know the difference between a predator and a swimming pool β it just knows "threat," and reacts the same way it always has.
π§ Fight, flight or freeze = ancient survival code
β‘ Brain's job = safety, not comfort
π This response is normal β not a flaw

Buoyancy & Breath Control
You already have a life jacket built in. It's your breath.
Most people think floating is about skill. It's not β it's about air. When you fill your lungs properly, your body becomes naturally more buoyant and sits higher in the water. That's physics, not talent.
The second part is learning to control that breath β breathing deeply and properly, not the shallow panicky gulps most of us default to in water. Once you can do both together, staying at the top of the water stops being a fight.
π Full lungs = your natural buoyancy aid
π« Deep, controlled breath = calm body
π This isn't talent β it's technique

Face In, Flat & Relearning to Breathe
Breathing is the one thing you never had to learn. Until now.
Breathing is involuntary, you've never had to think about it a day in your life. But the moment you learn to swim, you have to learn how to breathe all over again, on your terms, in a new rhythm.
Putting your face in the water isn't just about confidence, it keeps your body flat, which means less resistance and an easier swim. It feels unnatural at first because your body's automatic system suddenly needs conscious control.
ππΎββοΈ Face in = flat body = less resistance
𫧠Breathing becomes voluntary again, that's the hard part
π Unnatural at first doesn't mean wrong
This Saturday 25th July, 9.30am BST, I'm teaching exactly how to relearn this, Breathing for Swimming Webinar. Comment or DM me bubbles 𫧠for the link. Or visit SwimFearless.co.uk

THE BIGGEST QUESTION I GET ASKED ππ
"How long will it take me to learn to swim?"
And my honest answer?
How long is a piece of string?
Because here's the truth:
Everyone starts from where THEY are.
Not where someone else is.
Not where they think they should be.
Where THEY are.
And everyone has different goals.
Some people want to feel safe in water.
Some want to swim a length.
Some want to swim in the sea with their children.
Some want to finally conquer a fear that's held them back for decades.
Every starting point is valid. Every goal is valid.
But here's what I know after 30 years in aquatics:
The fastest way to reach YOUR goal?
Consistency. And belief.
Tell yourself:
"I AM a swimmer."
Not "I will be one day."
Not "maybe if I'm lucky."
"I AM a swimmer. This is it. I am learning NOW."
Because your brain believes what you repeat.
And when you decide, truly decide, that you're doing this?
Everything shifts. π
AND THE FASTEST WAY TO GET THERE?
Private 1-to-1 coaching with me.
