We Won! 🏆
Tonight I was a finalist for two East Midlands Chambers Enterprising Women Awards. We won one.
Tonight was the East Midlands Chambers Enterprising Women Awards, and I was a finalist in two categories: Female Entrepreneur of the Year and Social Commitment.
We won the Social Commitment Award. 🏆💜
I didn't take home Female Entrepreneur of the Year, but being one of five finalists out of the whole East Midlands business community is still something I'm genuinely proud of.
This win isn't mine alone. Thank you to the Unity Swimming directors and the entire teaching team, I could never have made this kind of impact on so many lives and communities without every one of you.
This award is dedicated to every single Unity Swimmer, past and present, since we started in 2022.

Why We AVOID Doing The Thing!

The Real Reason You're Stuck

There are three scientific reasons we procrastinate and one of them is probably why you still haven't tried that webinar.

🧠 Reason 1: Identity. If you don't yet see yourself as "someone who can swim," you won't even open the conversation about becoming one.

🌊 Reason 2: Fear of being seen. Struggling in a pool is public, there's nowhere to hide it the way you can hide a feeling.

💜 Reason 3: Cheap dopamine. Scrolling, staying on the sofa, the easy comfortable "no" - it feels better in the moment than booking the lesson that scares you.

Naming which one is holding you back is the real first step, before you've even touched water.

"Black people can't swim." "We sink." I've heard this stereotype too many times and I'm done letting it go unanswered. 💜

The real reason so many of us struggle to float isn't our bodies. It's our nervous system. Fear makes you tense, your breathing shallow, and you literally become heavier in the water.

Calm that nervous system through breath, and your body becomes light enough to float. That's not a myth, that's physiology.

I've taught so many people who were told as children they "couldn't float" simply because of their skin colour. Even Steven Bartlett describes in his book being told, as an eight-year-old about to go in the water, that Black people can't swim, a moment that seems to have stayed with him ever since.

It's a myth. It's a stereotype. And it's time we put it to bed.

If this is you, or someone you love, I run a FREE monthly Breathing for Swimming Webinar, real tools for controlling your breath, your fear, and your float.

Ticked a bucket list moment off, open water swimming at Stoney Cove! 🌊
Cold hit hard getting in. Controlled breathing, back float, calm nervous system and within minutes, I wasn't fighting the cold anymore. Crystal clear water, stunning. Wetsuit's already ordered. 💜

Important bit: if cold water ever catches YOU off guard, remember Float to Live 🫧
🌊 Head back, ears submerged
🌊 Relax, breathe normally
🌊 Gently move hands + legs
🌊 Legs sinking is fine, we all float differently
This could save a life. Share it!

I've been reluctant to make this post, because I'm not a man, but Brothers, I've had too many conversations with you, both Black and Asian men, for me not to say something! 🖤

The thig I keep hearing: "I can stand up, so I'm fine, if my kids get in trouble, I'll just get in and help." That's not how it works. When an untrained person jumps in to save someone, it usually turns one person in trouble into two, and both drown.

Jay-Z didn't learn to swim until he was 42, because his daughter Blue Ivy was born, and he couldn't bear the thought of not being able to help her. I've spoken to a Muslim man who plays every sport, travels the world for sport, but swimming is the one thing his whole family avoids.
Here's the reality: 37% of the people who drowned in the UK in 2024 never even intended to enter the water. They were walking. Running. Passing by. (Source: National Water Safety Forum, WAID 2024) Black and Asian men are three times more likely to drown in the UK than white men. Black and Asian men are three times more likely to drown in the UK than white men!

And to the men who tell me "I just sink, I'll never be able to float" that's a myth. It's about body type and technique, not skin colour or race, and it is entirely teachable. I can show you how to float and how to find your float.

Yesterday I was live on BBC Radio Leicester, talking about being named a finalist for the BBC Make a Difference Awards — Active category. 🏆
What lights me up isn't the award itself — it's what it represents. The chance to reach more people, from every background, all over the world, and help them overcome their fear of water, learn to swim, and in some cases, save their own lives. That's the heart of everything I do through Unity Swimming and Swim Fearless.
Missed me yesterday? I'll be live again tomorrow morning from 7am on the BBC Radio Leicester Breakfast Show with Ady Dayman, broadcasting on location. Listen free, live, on BBC Sounds → https://share.google/y6v8X50ZvLdykgL0I
