One of the most important objectives of funded The To***co, Health and History project has been to find out who was using to***co in the past before we could think about how it influenced health.
Anna Davies-Barrett and I are delighted to share one of our key papers on frequencies of to***co use in the past in the hope it encourages greater thought about the impact of consumption choices on health in the past. It is below.

Using an interdisciplinary approach we show that in England and The Netherlands, it is likely that by the late 18th and early 19th century, approximately 50% of people were consuming, with it being almost ubiquitous in some communities. Contrary to most historical narratives, many women were using too although in different ways to men! To***co use and its forms are strongly entwined with gender, lifestyle/occupation and status, with age also potentially acting as a factor too.

New research from Sarah Inskip, Anna Davies-Barrett, Bianca Bonucci and Christiana Scheib on the funded To***co, Health & History team on evaluating the accuracy of s*x estimation traits in British post-medieval archaeological populations using genetic data from dental calculus

We show that the Phenice traits are highly accurate (95%+), but some of the cranial traits have accuracies that are not high (60-70%). We provide new sectioning points and some formulae (if you want) to help improve this. We hope this is useful to those working on contemporaneous populations :)
