Great photo showing Clarence House where we have our Research Centre, thanks John Ghent Leicester Estate Agent !
🚋 Look at Humberstone Gate when trams ruled the road!
This bustling scene shows one of Leicester's busiest streets during the electric tram era. With trams, early motor cars, cyclists and pedestrians all sharing the road, Humberstone Gate was already becoming the commercial heart of the city.
A clue to the date lies on the right-hand side, where Clarence House, home to Wyggeston Girls' School from 1877, can be seen. The motor vehicle and tram design suggest this photograph was likely taken several decades later, probably during the 1920s.
Just imagine standing here today and comparing it to the modern Humberstone Gate.
📸 Do you think this looks closer to 1915, 1925, or even later?
IMPORTANT - due to current excessive heat, our Research Centre will be closed tomorrow (Thursday 25th and Friday (26th).
We will reopen on Wednesday 1st July at 10.30am.
Just a reminder that the Society's 2026 AGM takes place on Saturday 27th June at 2pm (Doors open at 1.30pm) at the Friends' Meeting House, 16 Queen's Road, Leicester. A copy of the agenda is in the June journal.
Following the main AGM business there will be a presentation 'Stories from the Research Service' by LRFHS Publicity Officer, Sue L.

Does anyone have family members from Barrowden ?
We have been contacted by someone who is keen to pass these photographs to anyone who recognises family or who has an interest in the village. Photos taken in The Crown. It was up for sale in the 1970s when it seems it closed as a public house.
Have just found an interesting fact about the village - Marianne Mason, from the village, married Thomas Cook in March 1883 at St. Peter’s Church.
