Part of our curriculum is exploring our world and it’s environment. To put this into practise we were fortunate to be able to take the children to Twycross Zoo. Children had the chance to see a range of different animals and engage in play with their families and friends. It was also a great opportunity for social interaction, as parents and children could socialise freely.

This term our toddlers are engaging in shape themed activities.
Today they had the opportunity in becoming familiar with triangles through a craft involving the assembling of a tree bark along with triangular pieces that represented the leaves of the tree.
This activity promoted children’s shape knowledge as well as giving them the opportunity to work on their fine and gross motor skills. Children engaged in this activity as a group and it was wonderful to see their creativity highlighted through the different trees created.

We recently held a cultural day at our nursery. Children and parents had the opportunity to go round our exhibition and learn about the different cultures and ethnicities shared in the setting. Children celebrated through dressing up in the their cultural clothing and trying different foods from all the displays. This event was filled with a positive ambience as parents socialised through talking about their backgrounds and discussed the similarities and differences they had with each other’s cultures.

Dentist visit

We were fortunate to have a dentist visit at the setting. They were able to discuss the importance of taking care of our oral health and the things we can do to keep our teeth healthy.

Children also had the opportunity to participate in activities to support their understanding of their oral health. One of the activities was a matching game, they were presented with a variety of food items and children had to match these foods based on their benefits to the healthy and non-healthy tooth. During this discussions were held regarding the need for balance when consuming sugary foods and healthy alternatives.

In addition, children were given the chance to explore some dental tools, one of the tools was the dental mirror. Children were paired in groups and worked together to take a look at each others teeth. This activity helped children become more comfortable with the idea of visiting the dentist and helped them to become familiar to what a dentist visit can look like

Jeans for Genes Day

As part of Jeans for Genes day, children participated in various activities to better their understanding of this campaign. Children had the chance in decorating outlines of jeans using different materials and mediums with the use of glue. This activity promoted children in exploring their creativity and creating original work.

Children explored dates at the nursery, together in groups we discussed the health benefits of eating dates and looked at pictures of date trees to see how they grow. Children participated in tasting the dates and having the opportunity in cutting the dates open to reveal the seeds. Some children tasted the dates and expressed their opinions on the feel and taste. They explained that it was “soft” and “sweet”.
