We had such an inspiring day at Kettle's Yard with the brilliant Karen Stamper Concertina Sketchbooks 🎨

We spent the day exploring creative processes, experimenting with materials, and discovering practical techniques to take back into the classroom. It was fantastic to see so many teachers embracing the opportunity to play, experiment, and share ideas with one another.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, to Karen for sharing her expertise, and to Kettle's Yard for such a beautiful setting.

Which technique would you be most excited to try with your students?

Water mixable oils are real oil paints, designed to behave like traditional oils but with the ability to mix with water🖌️

They offer the same rich colour and blending potential, with the added benefit of easier clean-up and fewer solvents.

When working with them, start with a thin wash to block in your composition. Keep early layers lean, using minimal oil or medium, then gradually build up thickness and depth as the painting develops.

Remember the key principle: fat over lean. Each layer should be slightly richer than the one before it to ensure stability and proper drying.

Water can be used for thinning paint and cleaning brushes in the early stages, while traditional oil mediums can still be used if preferred — just note they reduce water mixability.

Work wet into wet for soft blending, or build layers once the surface is touch dry.

A flexible way to approach traditional oil painting, with a more practical studio setup.
