MEDITATION

Every meditation asks you to sit still, with a straight back and a relaxed body. That puts you in a vigilant posture, and it lets your chest and abdomen move freely.

Meditators consider three kinds of breathing: chest, abdomen, and clavicles. Chest breathing is our normal everyday mode. Abdominal breathing means that your abdomen expands and contracts like an infant’s. Clavicle breathing means those bones open up. While that usually happens when people are frightened, meditators use that movement to maximize their inhalations. The increased breathing nourishes the body and calms the mind.

This is why the breath is the gateway to the spiritual: chanting, prayer, song, recitation, reading, blessing, and breath control—we utilize all of these to commune with the holy. We do that by stilling our everyday preoccupations and opening ourselves fully.

WATER OVER STONES

No matter how long I live,
how much I paint,
or how much I remember,
it isn’t enough

to explain mystery.
No matter how much
I use all of history,
it still isn’t enough.

So I turn to water over rock,
and how much they persist,
devoid of human thinking
and daily effort.

Water moves, but doesn’t think.
Rock remains, but doesn’t strive.
Yet both are examples
of what is enough.

All shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well. For there is a force of love moving through the universe that holds us fast and will never let us go.

THE LIMITLESS MIND

The mind is limitless.
The mind is formless.
The mind is endless space
from which entire worlds
emerge in an instant
and return to mystery.

There are no boundaries,
unless a mind, deluded
by religion, schooling, addiction,
weariness, and false foods,
believes itself to be small.

But that's an illusion.
Any mind can become vast.
Let your mind be unconstrained,
for out of that silent formlessness,
it can take any shape it wants,

at any speed, and over any distance.
Don't question it. Don't try
to measure or probe it.
Let it be in utter liberty.
Release its brilliance,
and flare into infinite light.

One who understands others has knowledge;
one who understands himself has wisdom.

Mastering others requires force;
mastering the self needs strength.

If you realise you have enough,
you are truly rich.

One who gives himself to his position surely lives long;
One who gives himself to the Tao surely lives forever.

Tao Te Ching, chap. 33, trans. Dyer
