A fabulous two days of camp again this week. More rain yesterday, not that that stopped play! We made, well tried to make down berry paint - only I added too much water so it was too pale..Tumeric to the rescue! The children then ground up some charcoal and mixed it with some gum Arabic and water to make some grey paint. Amazing what learning comes from mistakes 🙂 The guttering was such a hit again that snack became an open snack and free to access whenever they wanted. Exactly what learning and exploration should be like.

3 days flew by! We made blobsters using mud and natural clay, played in the mud kitchen, played a whole host of games, made turmeric sun prints, created a host of slides using the guttering, made dens, found a stash of mint growing which was added to the hot chocolate yesterday, made potions and lots lots more! It may have been torrential rain for most of yesterday, but it didn't stop us!
If you are looking for some active, fresh air, screen free fun for your kids next week I have some spaces available. Interested? Drop me a comment and I'll get back to you :)

Day 2 ..forecast rain and we had virtually none 🙂
Another busy day in the mud kitchen, and more tumeric prints, making a frame with sticks, using the guttering for intense racing of cars, animals…, a blindfold game..supposedly with one long line..ended up with 4 at one point! Dragon creations, tyre stacking…and that’s only what I saw! So much activity, laughter, friendships being made, connections created, learning but most of all..PLAY!
Bring on the rain tomorrow..the tarpaulins will all be out and dens and shelters will be created! Leaf rafts and races, a knot tying story adventure, making mint tea and experimenting to see if we can then make mint hot chocolate, natural paintbrushes and muddy paint…where the children will take the adventures tomorrow I’m so excited to find out! An excellent day 1 of summer camp! The sun shone and we played, chatted, made new friends and stepped out of comfort zones in doing all of that. We did tumeric prints and made blobsters using mud and powder clay. Such imagination, storytelling and descriptions.
In any other line of work do you pack up and before driving home go to B&Q to buy some more but if piping because the guttering was a massive hit and resulted in so many conversations and questions..nope!
Roll on tomorrow..& the rain!

I've had a wonderful time camping, but I've also had a lot of fun foraging. There's so much to find out in nature. Sloes, Nettles, and blackberries! They made a wonderful snack on my hikes.

I also found some St John's wort, sadly I couldn't forage any because it was past the flowering stage, but it was a fun discovery. Did you know? St John's Wort gets its name from St John the Baptist, as it traditionally bursts into bloom around Midsummer's Day (24th June), his feast day. Hold a leaf up to the light and you'll see tiny translucent dots scattered across it, which is exactly what gave the plant its Latin name, Hypericum perforatum ("perforated"). For centuries, it was hung over doorways and windows at Midsummer, thought to keep evil spirits at bay.

It's a good reminder that the plants beneath our feet come with their own stories, if we take the time to look.

At this year's summer camp in Bakewell, not only will we be doing classic forest school activities, but also some foraging. Giving kids an opportunity to see more in nature, a boring hedgerow or bramble patch becomes a treasure trove. Comment if you want to know more! 💚🌳
