There is no point assessing and then not intervening when children are showing learning difficulties! We need more money in our schools NOW to raise standards to build a country for EVERYONE not just the privileged few.

So what keeps me awake at night.........having worked in quite a few schools in Leeds and Bradford this past year, in temporary posts, it has become apparent to me that there is no help for children who are struggling with their learning. Teachers do what they can but this is hard with huge class sizes, eal, not trained in SEND, must I go on. Due to more and more government cut backs, we are failing a whole generation of children and young people. What's more -this grammar school nonsense. Every child has a right to a good education and all schools should offer this. OK have had my rant, but it despairs my when I see what is happening!

SENDgroup run by Arran Smith, who shows that having severe dyslexia all your life doesn't stop you being very successful, gave a webinar on 'Touch-Type-Read-Spell or TTRS for short. This is a multisensory course that teaches touch-typing to support reading and spelling. The course of modules are taught in line with the Alpha to Omega teaching programme. It is web-based and the subscription is at an incredible £8 a month. However, they are offering a two week trial for free at the moment. Checkout www.ttrsonline.com. All the children that I work with that struggle to write, this will be ideal. Minimum age is suggested to be age 6 or 7 but can be used right through to adult age. I could also use this as a reward, ice-breaker or just to boost confidence, as I do with wordshark. There are lots of different settings too, such as colours and textures and voice options. Hope this helps.

Multisensory learning is so important for children with learning difficulties. Years of research have proven that a multisensory approach, which is teaching children through all 3 pathways to the brain, sight, sound and touch. In this case all 3 pathways are engaged whichever the learner's dominant learning pathway, visual, auditory or kinaesthetic. Multisensory learning helps the learner retain the information into their long-term memory.

I have just watched an excellent webinar, presented by Pearsons and Shona Crichton on children with Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties (SLCD). A staggering 50% of children starting school, in some areas, have some level of SLCD. I think that some parents don't understand what a profound effect this has on a child's ability to become literate. The earlier these children are spotted, the more likely they are to reach their full potential. www.communicationtrust.org.uk has excellent resources for schools and parents.
