It seems Equine Flu appears to be spreading both in vaccinated and unvaccinated horses across the UK.
I am always super vigilant when it comes to biosecurity. However, with the recent reports showing such an increase i'm being super vigilant.
I have a responsibility to protect not only clients horses through possible transference but all my own horse and yard.
I have strict protocols in regards to sanitising and disinfecting. If you suspect anything not normal in your horses health ie snotty noses, cough etc then its an idea to be checking temperature. I have seen a local vets asking owners to check horses temperature before bringing them into clinics. I think temperature checks are a good idea. Although they are not always going to have a temperature if you find its elevated then it needs further investigation and measures taken just to be precautious.
I think we all need to be vigilant x

Its Springtime ๐ finally its coming I promise its just slowly. Here's to longer days and less rain fingers crossed ๐ค
Important please read ๐........
As the seasons are changing i've noticed there has been quite a few horses moving yards in the last few weeks. At the same time i've been informed about positive cases of EHV and Equine Influenza in North Yorkshire which seems to be especcially on the rise this year. Obviously there is always Strangles too which likes to cause chaos with yard shut downs and poorly horses. I also need to mention skin diseases. Really anything that can spread from horse to horse and from horse to human in the case of Ringworm.
Please can I ask that if your horse shows any signs of illness that are not normal and I am due to see your horse/pony that you notify me as soon as possible. Ie snotty noses, coughs, temperature, lesions to the skin. Just as if there are cases on the yard or horses being tested even if it is not your horse. This will always be kept strictly confidential as the yard protocols and the decision to inform the greater equine public is the at the yard owners discretion. It means I can make an informed decision on your appointment. If you buy a new horse and the horse is placed in quarantine I will be unable to visit until the quarantine period has finished. In regards to strangles, if you can let me know about testing as I know some yards request this prior to moving onto new yards.
I have always had strict biosecurity measures in place anyway but I need to ensure there are no illnesses carried from horse to horse during yard visits and also keep my own horse and fellow liveries safe.
We just all need to be vigilant I know most yards have upped the biosecurity protocols to stop transmittance but we all need to be on guard and look after each other's horses.
Better to be in the know xx
