Freshers’ Week is all about meeting new people, and sometimes, your closest friendships come from the places you least expect!

From your course and societies to accommodation, events, or simply sitting next to someone and starting a conversation, there are so many ways to meet people at Leeds.

One favourite place to meet new friends is Global Café! 🌎☕️

Every Monday, students and postgraduate researchers can drop by Common Ground at Leeds University Union to relax, enjoy free refreshments, and have a chat with people from all around the world. The hosts are there to welcome newcomers, so you can turn up on your own and still have someone to talk to.

No booking needed, just turn up!

Who knows? That random conversation might become a friendship that lasts far beyond Freshers’ Week!!

Not sure what to pack for university? What will be useful? What not to forget?

Here are the essential things we’d definitely recommend making space for in your luggage if you’re coming to the University of Leeds!

Whether you’re moving from across the UK or across the world, you don’t need to bring your whole life with you, just the things that’ll make settling in a little easier.

A little preparation now can make those first few days feel much more comfortable.

Save this for when you start packing! 📦

Follow a ‘Day in the Life’ of our student ambassador, Presto, spending a summer in Leeds conducting an independent research project as a Laidlaw Scholar.
The Laidlaw Leadership and Research Programme is a fully funded programme for talented and motivated undergraduates to become skilled researchers and ethical leaders. The program has a strong networking component, being a global opportunity with scholars from universities across the US, UK, Canada, and Hong Kong.
It’s a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to undertake research first hand early in their academic journey, which has been a rewarding way for Presto to explore academic passions outside of his degree.

Moving to a new city doesn’t mean leaving your favourite food behind! 🌍🍽️

One of the things we love about Leeds is how easy it is to find flavours from all over the world, and Kirkgate Market is the perfect place to start. From comforting classics to exploring new cuisines, every visit is a chance to discover something new (without breaking the student budget 👀).

We stopped by a few of our favourite stalls, shared what we ordered, and included the prices so you can get a feel for what eating out in Leeds is really like.

Whether you’re hoping to find a taste of home or looking forward to exploring new cuisines, there’s plenty to discover here.
