This Week in Literary History:
On 11 May 1916, Spanish novelist, poet, short story writer and essayist Camilo José Cela was born.
Associated with the Generation of ’36, Cela became one of the most important voices in 20th-century Spanish literature. His best-known works include La familia de Pascual Duarte and La colmena, two essential titles for understanding modern Spanish narrative.
At Instituto Cervantes Leeds, we commemorate his life and work, and recommend his books to Spanish speakers and learners who want to explore one of Spain’s great literary figures.

We’re bringing you , a new initiative where we recommend a book in Spanish to help you practise your Spanish outside the classroom and discover the richness of literature in Spanish.
This week’s recommendation is El Infinito en un Junco, by Irene Vallejo. A fascinating journey through the history of books, from smoke, stone, clay and papyrus to paper, plastic and light.
Part essay, part travelogue, it takes us across battlefields, libraries, palaces and hidden archives to celebrate one of humanity’s greatest inventions: the book.
