LIVE this week on The Female Stoic Podcast: Insight Timer
Societal Expectations, A Room with a View, and What It Means for Us Today
In Edwardian society, travel was never meant to challenge you. Tourists were expected to follow their guidebooks, keep to their own kind, and return home with their prejudices intact. Self-discovery was not part of the itinerary.
E.M. Forster had other ideas. In A Room with a View, he dismantles that expectation entirely.
Stoicism asks us to honour our higher self. It encourages us to think freely, live deliberately, and not surrender our inner world to externals/indifferents. So what happens when societal expectation becomes the very thing standing between us and that freedom?
In this episode, I argue that when convention dictates not just how we behave, but what we're permitted to think and learn, it becomes something we must consciously place outside our inner citadel. We must treat it as the indifferent it truly is.
