The Science of Magic and the Magic of Science
Learn how everyday science can look like real magic. This 7-week interactive course for all ages (younger children must be supervised by an adult and parents/guardians must decide suitability of suggested materials and activities) explores physics, chemistry, and psychology. Students can perform or watch simple tricks and uncover the real-world science behind illusions.
2nd jun Week 1: The Psychology of Magic Tricks
Explore how “magic tricks” exploit gaps in human cognition, such as perception, attention, and memory. Learn about misdirection, sleight of hand and how the human brain fills in missing details.
What to bring: a spoon and a coin.
9th jun Week 2: The Science of Optical Illusions, the Human Eye and Brain
When there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your brain interprets, an illusion is created. Scientists categorize them into three main types: cognitive, physiological and physical illusions. Make a classic Victorian optical toy that demonstrates the principle of persistence of vision.
What to bring: Coloured pens or pencils, scissors, piece of white card (needs to be stiff, so card not thin paper), glue stick, some type of small stick eg chopstick/skewer/straw.
note there is a 2 week break here not following usual term time, we then resume 30th jun:
30th jun Week 3: The Unpoppable Balloon and the Science of Polymers
Explore the science of polymers by performing (or watching) the unpoppable balloon trick.
What to bring: Balloon, wooden skewer, and any kind of oil.
7th jul Week 4: The Fireproof Balloon trick and the Science of Thermal Conductivity
Explore the science of thermal conductivity by comparing how air-filled and water-filled balloons react to a flame.
What to bring: 2 balloons, water, candle, lighter/matches. Parent supervision mandatory. Wear safety goggles or glasses. The burning candle presents a fire risk.
14th jul Week 5: Disappearing Coins, Invisible glasses and the Science of Refraction
Students investigate the bending of light, refraction and the refractive index with the Disappearing Coin and Invisible Glass trick.
What to bring: large clear glass or beaker, small clear glass/beaker/test tube (must fit inside larger one), coin, tap water, and any cheap vegetable oil.
21st jul Week 6: The Floating Sauce Packet Trick and the Science of Density and Pressure
Students explore buoyancy and pressure with the floating sauce packet trick. They’ll learn how squeezing a bottle changes the density of the packet, making it sink or float.
What to bring: Plastic bottle, water, and a ketchup (or any other sauce) packet that you get from a restaurant or fast food place.
28th jul Week 7: The Science behind Famous Magic Tricks
Eg. zig-zag Lady, death saw, cups and balls, metamorphosis, the science of contortion.
Bring: nothing!
