28/08/2026

Struggling to even find words for what’s happening in Nepal and Tibet. It is beyond heartbreaking and my heart goes out to everyone affected and may the people who have lost their lives rest in peace. Along with the wildlife and animals, too.

It’s also enraging to me. The cruel unfair reality is that communities least responsible for sped up climate change also continue to be most devastatingly affected. Nepal’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is minuscule comparatively yet it has become one of the most affected countries. According to data compiled by the Carbon Majors database, just 32 companies are responsible for half of the world's carbon emissions. Climate disaster preparedness needs to become a global number one priority and shared responsibility.

Climate change deniers often argue that climate change is natural and has always happened and while this is true to an extent, these sorts of events have always happened in the history of the planet, but it is also a scientific fact that landslides in these mountainous regions are becoming more and more frequent and that is linked to the melting of glaciers. Scientists have been warning for years how the Himalayan region is vulnerable to this type of flooding, as it contains many glacial lakes. Preliminary investigations of this particular event point to a collapsed glacier as the cause of the flash flood on the Nepal-Tibet border, highlighting this issue of rapidly melting Himalayan ice due to accelerating anthropogenic caused global warming.

I’d also like to put a warning out to parents the videos constantly circulating on places like Instagram and TikTok and even the news are extremely distressing and I don’t think helpful for young people to see. Just this morning I saw a video that has made me sick to my stomach of people running from a wall of water. It feels like there’s a level of desensitisation happening when these videos on social media have become normalised almost as if it’s a movie and not real life. While I believe it’s crucial to stay informed of current events, that does not feel like the right or respectful way to do it. Moreover it leads to young people feeling traumatised and distressed. I know that I grew up extremely anxious about climate change and it saddens me that young people continue to carry this weight on their shoulders. Ultimately I believe we need to remain hopeful while safeguarding young and vulnerable people, but also we must use our anger and worry to fuel change and continue to put pressure on people in power to take more urgent and serious action

The devastating floods that have swept through the Nepal–Tibet border region are first and foremost a human tragedy
