From apprentice to Assistant Manager!

Caris started working in the nursery with no previous Early Years experience. But it didn’t take long for her to find her feet, grow in confidence and really start to thrive.

She started her Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship, learning all about child development, learning through play and how she can support children to reach their potential.

During her apprenticeship, Caris developed a particular interest in babies and their development through working in the baby room. It was here where she discovered a real passion for supporting the learning and development of this age group — and that passion shaped the next step in her career.

After completing her Level 3 qualification, Caris applied for a Head of Room position in the baby room.

She went on to lead a team, role model the importance of nurturing relationships and support practitioners to provide the best possible experiences for the babies in their care.

And she didn’t stop there…
➡️ She progressed to Third in Charge
➡️ Supported the Manager and Deputy with the running of the setting
➡️ Started her Level 5 qualification
➡️ And is now an Assistant Manager!

In her current role, Caris helps oversee the day-to-day running of the nursery, supports and coaches practitioners within her team and is also the setting’s SENCO — creating support plans, working closely with parents and liaising with other professionals to ensure children get the support they need.

And this is exactly why we love apprenticeships. ❤️

People often think as an Educator in Early Years we’re “just” playing, singing songs, reading stories, changing nappies and playing all day...
But to a young child, we are doing SO much more. 💛

An amazing early years educator can be the person who:

✨ Helps a shy child find their voice
✨ Celebrates the first attempt, second and third attempt, not just the finished result
✨ Teaches children that it’s important to keep trying

A little reminder for every early years practitioner…

Whether you’re just starting your early years journey or you’ve been working in the sector for years, there’s one thing we should all remember:

Nobody expects you to know everything.
Everybody is learning every single day .

Asking questions is a good thing.
Never be afraid to ask “why?”, “how?” or “what would you do?” Asking questions shows that you care about getting it right and want to keep learning.

Every experienced practitioner started somewhere.
That confident practitioner you look up to? They were once the new person too. Nobody starts their career knowing everything.

You won’t remember everything straight away.
We won’t always get things right. What matters is reflecting, learning from our experiences and using them to become better practitioners.

Confidence comes with experience.
You don’t have to feel confident on day one. Keep learning, keep practising and keep asking questions — confidence will grow along the way.

What’s changing in the EYFS from 1 September around Safer Sleep …

There are some important changes coming to the EYFS around safer sleep — and now is a great time for settings and practitioners to make sure everyone is confident with what’s expected.

From 1 September 2026, safer sleep requirements will be set out much more clearly within the EYFS.

Here are some of the key things practitioners need to know 👇

💤 Back to sleep
Babies and children under 2 should be placed to sleep on their back, in their own separate sleep space, on a firm, flat surface.

🛏️ Babies aged 12 months and under must sleep in a cot; This includes a cot, travel cot, carrycot or Moses basket that meets the relevant safety standards. Floor beds/sleep pods do not meet this requirement for babies under 12 months.

🚫 Keep the sleep space clear
Cots should not contain toys, pillows, bumpers, wedges, straps or additional blankets.

🌡️ Think about temperature
Babies should not become too hot or too cold. The recommended room temperature for babies is 16–20°C.

🧢 Keep heads uncovered
Children’s heads should not be covered while sleeping.

👀 Supervision matters
Babies under 6 months must have an adult in the same room for every sleep, and all sleeping children must be frequently checked and remain within sight and hearing of staff.

🍼 Remember the individual child
Safer sleep is not simply about having a policy on the wall. Practitioners need to understand the guidance and apply it consistently as part of everyday practice.

And a really important reminder…
👉 These changes are about making expectations clearer in the EYFS. Settings should already be following safer sleep guidance and making sure staff are confident in their responsibilities. It’s also important to remember your setting may also have their own sleep policy which may detail further practices you need to implement in addition to the above.

📚 For practitioners and managers: now is the perfect time to revisit your safer sleep policy, staff knowledge, sleep environment, risk assessments and monitoring arrangements.

We started the day with this amazing feedback from Jamie who has just finished her Early Years Educator qualification and finished the day with more amazing feedback from Kaitlin who has just completed her Early Years Practitioner qualification today!
