Greetings to all the freshers this year. It’s almost time to start planning for your trip to Leeds. 「一日一蘋果，醫生遠離我。」相信大家對呢句說説話都唔陌生，可惜嘅係香港人可能以後都會少咗一款蘋果選擇。

1995年6月20日，蘋果日報由黎智英創立。根據香港基本法第27條，香港居民享有言論、新聞、出版的自由，結社、集會、遊行、示威的自 由，組織和參加工會、罷工的權利和自由。26年間，蘋果日報一直為香港市民報導新聞，直至2021年6月24日，香港政府以國安法凍結蘋果日報的資金使其無法營運，此舉無疑是對香港新聞自由的打壓並與基本法賦予港人的基本權利產生衝突。

蘋果日報一直與香港人同行，風雨不改為大眾報導真相。然而，敢言的作風卻引起了政府的關注及反感，被視為眼中釘。自此政府先後以國安法拘捕蘋果的相關人士，包括創辦人黎智英及社論的主筆楊先生(筆名李平)，扼殺了他們的言論及新聞自由。

蘋果日報的付出大家有目共睹，在最後一天的晚上引來了市民為他們道別，感激他們多年來的辛勞。不知日後還會否有機會再細味這蘋果，請容許我們在這裡説一聲，珍重，再會。

‘An Apple a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away’ is undoubtedly a mundane phrase to everyone. Unfortunately, Hong Kong people will soon lose the choice of reading Apple Daily.

Apple Daily was founded by Jimmy Lai Chee-Ying on 20 June 1995. According to Article 27 of the Basic Law, ‘Hong Kong residents shall have freedom of speech, of the press and of publication; freedom of association, of assembly, of procession and of demonstration; and the right and freedom to form and join trade unions; and to strike.’ In between these years, despite the possible consequences that may arise, Apple Daily had been reporting all kinds of news to citizens. However, on 24 June 2021, the HKSAR froze the capital of Apple Daily in the name of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law which led to the shut down of the media.

Apple Daily had been reporting facts to us regardless of the rain and shine. Yet, this act led to the attention and disapproval of the government. Since then, it was treated as a thorn in the eye, the HKSAR started to arrest the involved members of the paper, including the founder Jimmy Lai and the chief editor Mr. Yeung (Pen name: Lee Ping). This action implied that their freedom of expression and press were taken away.

The effort made by the press is obvious to everyone. In order to show the gratefulness of citizens, they arranged a farewell the night before the shutting down of Apple Daily. Even if we may not have the opportunity to savour this ‘Apple’ again,
allow us to say, ‘Farewell.’
