Fun ways to say goodbye

Our little peoples lives worthy of more than being on a conveyor belt and institutionalised!

The first school catering for children under the age of two has officially opened in Swindon.

There are already seven youngsters aged between nine and 24 months attending lessons at Liden Academy’s new unit for the very youngest children, which started earlier this month.

And they were joined by staff and senior managers from the school, and the Excalibur Academy Trust which runs, it for an official ribbon cutting.

Jefferey Mason, the principal at Liden Academy said: “I’m very excited to open this new provision- parents really need it.

“We’ve had great support from Swindon Borough Council, especially Sally Clarke its early years lead, for her support and for a substantial grant of £12,000 to fit out and equip the room.

“Our nursery offers a unique all-through educational journey, enabling children to remain in our care from nine months old through to 11 years of age.

“We’d like parents to join that journey as early as possible all the way to year six.”

The Chief Executive of the Excalibur Trust, Nick Lewis said: “There’s nothing more valuable to the community than its children.

“And to be able to look after someone else’s child is a great privilege.”

The school’s Early Years lead, Suzanne Durham said: “We have seven children now, and can go up to 12 immediately, and after that, we can expand further – it would just be a matter of staffing.

“The children and the staff are absolutely loving it. You can really see the development in the children, especially their language skills. They’re with other children, and adults, and you can see it makes a difference. The staff are thoroughly enjoying it as well. The children are lovely.”

Ms Clarke explained that the government had expanded the entitlement for parents to claim funding for education for children between nine months and two years old.

She said: “We were able to help fund this using the early years expansion grant.”

Mr Mason said: “Any parent who thinks they and their child can benefit from this provision should just get in touch with the school to inquire.

“We’re happy to arrange tours for them to have a look round if they’d like.”

The government are making changes that are making it difficult for childminders to stay open.

Your support is appreciated.

A child notices a hole punch.
They are captivated.
Not by what they’re told to make —
but by the click, the resistance, the tiny circle that falls free.
And instead of rushing them on…
we slow down.
We honour the repetition.
We trust the fascination.
We recognise this as deep learning, not “just fiddling”.
So we set up a quiet invitation to play:
A few simple hole punches.
Strips of beautiful paper.
A small bowl to collect the circles.
Soft light.
Time.
No rush. No outcome. No worksheet.
This is slow pedagogy.
Letting curiosity lead.
Allowing mastery to unfold.
Building strong hands, focused minds and regulated nervous systems — without ever forcing the learning.
When we honour a child’s interests, we tell them:
🤍 You matter
🤍 Your curiosity is important
🤍 Your pace is enough
And that changes everything.
If you’d love support in creating calm, meaningful, child-led environments like this, you’re so welcome to explore my training:
