Courage in Karate 🥋
Some say courage is the most important virtue because without it, we struggle to practise any of the other virtues consistently.
The same is true in karate.
It takes courage to walk into the dojo for the first time.
Courage to train when you’re tired.
Courage to attempt something you might get wrong.
Courage to stand in front of others and perform your kata.
Courage to grade knowing you might not pass.
Courage to face someone better than you in kumite.
And sometimes, courage simply to turn up when your confidence is low.
Anyone can show discipline when they feel motivated. Anyone can persevere when things are going well.
The real test is whether you can keep doing those things consistently when they become difficult.
Karate isn’t about being fearless. Courage is feeling the nerves, doubt or discomfort - and stepping forward anyway.
Every time we do that, we develop something far more important than a better punch or kick.
We develop character!
