OUR APPROACH
At Thorpe Tuition, we use a 5-step approach to meet the needs and requirements of each child. Step 1: Assessment - To get things started we will do a quick assessment, comprising a range of verbal, non-verbal, maths and English questions in a relaxed and non-test environment. This assessment takes about 60 minutes and is designed to establish your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Step 2: Design - Following the assessment we will design a series of lessons tailored to your child’s requirements. We will provide you with a learning programme overview and set goals for the course. Step 3: Booking - Once the programme is designed and approved, we will get you booked in, agreeing on a tutorial day and time. Step 4: Lessons - The lessons can now commence. All sessions are practical and fun, using a range of resources, games, interactive computer activities and worksheets. Step 5: Measurement - Progress is closely monitored throughout the series of lessons and goals are achieved. Coloured overlays and other practical resources will be provided for children with dyslexia or other special needs where appropriate.
12 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. We teach English and Maths
2. What age group do you teach? We teach anyone between the age of 5-16
3. Can you teach children with disabilities? We have considerable experience of teaching children with ADHD, dyspraxia, autism, speech and language issues., and other learning difficulties, in addition to more able pupils. We have access to teachers who have SEND qualifications and the expertise to work with students with disabilities.
4. Can you do assessments for dyslexia? We are able to screen (not diagnose) for dyslexia using two different assessment tools. Screening takes about 40/60 minutes. This screening gives an indication of whether the child is dyslexic and in which areas they may struggle. A detailed report is then given to the parents with suggestions of the support which can be given to the child. This screening process costs £100.
5. How do you know our child will improve? The main objective is to make your child more confident in the areas they may find difficult. With carefully differentiated lessons, and a small amount of tailored homework, over time the children would be expected to improve both academically and in their confidence.
6. How long are the lessons? Each lesson lasts for 50 minutes, followed by a 10 minute report and discussion with the parents.
7. Do lessons take place in the school holidays? Where possible, lessons will continue to run in the holidays.
8. Where do the lessons take place? The lessons generally take place at the tutor’s home. By agreement, it may be possible to deliver lessons at the child’s home.
9. Will my child receive homework? They will receive homework that is related to the lesson that day. It will be no more than 30 minutes. If there are any issues with your child not being able to complete the homework, let us know.
10. What do I need to do, if I want to withdraw my child from tuition? You will be required to give three weeks’ notice if you feel your child no longer requires tutoring.
11. What if my child can't make a lesson? All missed lessons are to be paid for, including any holidays taken in lesson time. We use the same school holidays calendar as Leeds City Council.
12. How do we pay? A weekly standing order will be agreed and set up or cash will be paid at the time of the lesson.
