This week, Lauren (Driving Assessment Manager) and Jayne (Driving School Lead) attended the Mature Driver Conference in Birmingham.

It was an incredibly valuable event, offering a great opportunity to connect with others working in the field and to share knowledge and experiences. The presentations were insightful, with some really impactful data shared around older drivers, safety, and future considerations for our work. It’s always beneficial to step back, reflect on best practice, and bring fresh ideas back to the team to help us continue improving the support we provide.

Nice to get lovely positive feedback!

From our Moving and Handling training course feedback, 93% of delegates said they would recommend our courses.

"The training was very good, we were all involved in the practical and we worked in groups. We learnt a lot from each other and the theory was well presented. We had access to the presentations before the training and everything was well explained."

Centre staff facilitated a project led by Orthopaedic surgeons in Leeds to conduct a research study to discover when it’s safe to drive following a full knee replacement. And there were some surprising results!

This joint venture involved orthopaedic surgeon, Vasileios Giannoudis from Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds University, and the William Merritt Centre (WMC). The primary objective was to determine when it is safe for patients to resume driving after undergoing total knee arthroplasty (full knee replacement surgery).

William Merritt Centre recruited 20 participants: 10 who had undergone left knee replacements and 10 who had right knee replacements. The group consisted of 13 men and 7 women, with owners of both manual and automatic vehicles represented.

Each candidate underwent a standard driving assessment after a pain evaluation. Six participants completed the assessment after 2 weeks, while 14 did so after 4 weeks. Impressively everyone passed their assessment, and none required vehicle adaptations!

Unsurprisingly, patients who had right knee replacements and drove manual cars took longer to be ready to drive compared to those using automatic vehicles. Despite the trial's small sample size of 20 individuals, the findings suggest that returning to driving after 4 weeks may potentially set a new gold standard for official guidance. Notably, women returned to driving more quickly than men, a trend not currently reflected in existing medical literature.

Although more research is necessary due to the limited sample size, the results of this trial are compelling.

At our Annual General Meeting, Dr. Giannoudis extended his gratitude to the staff at WMC for their expertise and hard work in conducting this trial.
