See you in year 5!

We all need a break sometimes, but it’s good to know that we can support your child’s learning whenever they need that boost!

Bethel has been with us for several months and we’ve seen her confidence and skills grow! She’s been doing brilliantly ⭐️

So now it’s time to put her skills into practice and she’s taking a little break from extra tutoring, but she knows that when she needs us again, we’ll be right here.

If you’re a past student, we can still help you!

The other week we heard how Ali had been practicing equivalent fractions with us, and felt ready to take on the challenge herself…

After that lesson we set her some homework, with some more practice and when she came into her next session, we gave her even more fractions to do!

Why so many?

Well, because now she gets it.

Not only can she do the questions, she can tell you exactly what she’s doing as she’s going along. Consistently practicing the method and explaining it to someone else is a great way of ensuring that knowledge is embedded.

And we didn’t have to move on until she felt ready…we had plenty of time for her to feel comfortable, confident and successful.

This is what confidence looks like

Our sessions are in groups but our students are not taught as a group

Instead we have time to sit one to one with our students and give them the opportunity to learn, to ask questions and to practice

Then when they’re ready… off the go!

Ali had been working on equivalent fractions both at school and at home for a little while.
Even though Ali is great at her times tables, she was finding the methods for equivalent fractions a little tricky.

But we’ve taken the time to explain and given her the space to practice

And what do you know? She’s confident enough to give it ago.

We’re going to practice them with her again this week just to make sure she’s still got the hang of it.

But we’re really proud of her positive attitude and the confidence she’s gaining week by week!

What topics did you find tricky at school? What would have helped you become more confident?

We cannot say this loud enough… TIMES TABLES ARE SO IMPORTANT!

Learning them will make maths so much easier…so here’s what you should know each year.

How many do you know?

Helpful questions to support reading comprehension…

We know that being able to read isn’t just about the words on the page, it’s about understanding them and the story they tell too!

Reading comprehension is often tricky especially when it comes to inference questions. Lots of children can “fact find” quite well but struggle when they have to think about how the characters might feel or why they have behaved in certain ways. Sometimes it’s hard to express this understanding especially when they have to write it down.

So let’s start exploring this skill verbally - and here’s some great questions that you can ask at home!

If you’re reading to them, or they’re reading to you (Both are valuable and can help foster a love of reading) then stop every once in a while and ask these questions…

You’ll have a book worm in no time!

Have you got any more good questions? Leave them in the comments!

It’s that time of year when we’re starting to say goodbye to our wonderful year 11s.

Many of our students we’ve taught throughout their time at school and we’re sad to see them go but excited to watch who they become too…

Our year 11s should be so proud of all the hard work and commitment they’ve shown, over the past couple of years in particular

We’re hoping for the results they all deserve!

How great is this?!

Top of the class and feeling confident. We help our students take that next step and we couldn’t be prouder!

When we asked Will what he thought had helped him do so well, he said it was “50% Kip and 50% my own hard work”, which is a bit of a Goldilocks formula if you ask us!

We want our students to have the motivation to work hard, we want to work alongside them to get the results they deserve.

Most things are easier once you take some time to get to know them, don’t you agree?

Ali had been learning decimals in school and was finding it a little tricky. We always encourage our students to let us know what’s going on in school so we can support their learning alongside their schoolwork in the best way…

We spent some time looking at place value with her and understanding the relationship between decimals and fractions and whole numbers.

Then we let her independently do one of our computer activities to strengthen her practice.

By the end of the session Ali had let us know she was feeling much better about her decimals now.

But that’s not it! It’s not one practice session and we move on…

We’ll take our time over a few weeks to help her feel really confident and consistent in her maths. Because at Kip we know these things are key.
