Adult-Led and Inviting Activities
Adult-led and inviting activities are an important part of our provision because they give children opportunities to learn, explore and develop new skills with purposeful support from adults. Adult-led activities allow practitioners to introduce new experiences, model language and skills, ask meaningful questions and extend children’s thinking and learning.
Inviting activities are carefully planned to encourage children to become curious, independent and motivated to explore. They provide opportunities for children to follow their own interests while developing skills across the EYFS areas of learning. Adults observe, interact and know when to step in to support or extend learning without taking over the child’s play.
We use adult-led and inviting activities to help us build on what children already know and understand, while providing appropriate challenge and opportunities for children to practise and apply new skills.
Books in Every Area
We place books and print resources throughout the different areas of our provision because reading and communication are an important part of the EYFS. Having books readily available encourages children to develop a love of reading and allows them to independently access stories, information and new vocabulary during their play.
Books linked to different areas also help children make connections between reading and their experiences. For example, books about construction, animals, emotions, numbers or the natural world can support children to develop their knowledge and vocabulary within their play.
Embedding books throughout the environment supports Communication and Language and Literacy, while also strengthening children’s learning across the wider curriculum. It encourages children to talk, listen, ask questions, develop vocabulary, understand stories and make links between what they read and what they experience.
By making books accessible in every area, we are creating an environment where reading is naturally embedded into children’s everyday learning and play.
