Stoic Rule #11: Practice Voluntary Hardship.
Occasionally subjecting yourself to minor discomforts builds resilience and appreciation for comfort. It reminds us that we are capable of enduring more than we think. Don't become too reliant on ease. Challenge yourself in small ways.
Do this for the next 7 days: Choose to do one slightly uncomfortable task that you usually avoid and notice how you can be grateful for those things you take for granted.

Stoic Rule #10: Choose Your Companions Wisely.
The people we surround ourselves with have a significant impact on our character and well-being. Seek out those who are virtuous, wise, and supportive. Avoid those who are negative, envious, or lead you astray. Remember to choose friends who elevate you.
Do this for the next 7 days: Reflect on the people you spend the most time with. Do they inspire you to be a better person? If not, consider limiting the time you have with them.

Stoic Rule #9: The Inner Citadel.
Your mind is your ultimate refuge, a fortress that no external force can truly pe*****te. You CAN build inner strength, reason, and self-control. You CAN protect your inner peace from the chaos of the outside world. Your thoughts are your sanctuary.
Do this for the next 7 days: When faced with external negativity, consciously retreat into your thoughts and focus on your inner calm for a few minutes.
This will build your Inner Citadel.

Stoic Rule #8: Practice Negative Visualization.
Instead of taking good things for granted, imagine losing them. This exercise cultivates gratitude for what we have and prepares us for potential loss. Appreciating the fragility of life enhances our present enjoyment. Cherish what you have now.
Do this for the next 7 days: Take a moment to imagine losing something you value and reflect on how grateful you are to have it. Gratitude is a powerful agent for change.

Stoic Rule #7: Remember Death (Memento Mori).
Contemplating our mortality is not morbid but a powerful tool for living fully. It reminds us of the preciousness and finite nature of time. This awareness helps us prioritize what truly matters and avoid wasting our lives on trivialities. Live each day as if it were your last.
Do this for the next 7 days: Take a moment to reflect on your own mortality and consider how it influences your priorities. Have you lived your day well?

Stoic Rule #6: Live According to Nature.
Understand the natural order of the world and your place within it. Live in harmony with reason and the natural flow of life. This means accepting change, understanding cause and effect, and acting in accordance with our human nature to be social and rational. Find your natural rhythm.
Do this for the next 7 days: Spend some time in nature - take a walk, sit in your garden, visit the park - and reflect on its inherent order and how you can align with it.

You don’t need a map.

This talk is a departure from my usual track content. It’s a poem. Its still a chocolate chunk of wisdom, but not from NLP or Stoicism. I only came across it a few years ago and it has had a profound affect in me. It seems to encapsulate all that I have learned during my years of practicing NLP and Stoicism, succinctly and beautifully wrapped in a short poem.
Often cited in mindfulness circles, the poem I am sharing with you is called 'The Guest House'. Written by the 13th century Persian poet Mawlana Jalaludin Rumi, it is a reminder for us to not resist the thoughts and emotions that are passing through us, but to meet them with courage, warmth, and respect.
In the poem, Rumi explores what life would be like for a guest house if it was a living human being, and how a guest house welcomes every one that comes to its door.
It is about welcoming all positive and negative emotions as they come into our lives. And it encourages us to treat every feeling like a guest, accepting each one gracefully with understanding because they all have something to teach us.

This Being Human Is A Guest House
When Jacci came across this poem it had a profound affect on the way she deals with all of her emotions, and therefore looks to share that wisdom in this track. Rather than avoiding some emotions, the poem encourages us to accept them all as a valid experience that offers the opportunities of learni...
