In 1893, at the age of just 13, George ‘Bertie’ Robinson left his family, friends and his home on the island of St. Vincent and sailed to England. He would become the footman at Harewood House in Yorkshire. Bertie did not leave any written records of his time in England that have been found, and we have to piece his story together from the letters written by his Mum and his employers, the 5th Earl and Countess of Harewood. Read about his life and how prejudice and racism in Britain contributed to a sad end to Bertie’s life in England:
