🦠 Tick season update
Six ticks off me already this morning and the sun has only been up a few hours .

Whether you're out stalking, dog walking or shifting brambles, it's that time of year when the ticks are everywhere. They don't leap or scurry, they just wait, a bit of damp undergrowth, a passing leg and on they come.

🧬 Why care?
Ticks carry Lyme disease and it's not something to brush off. Fatigue, joint pain, long-term illness, horrific if you're trying to enjoy the outdoors or do your job properly.

🛠 What to do:

Carry a tick remover

Check yourself and your dog after every session

Clean any bite site and keep an eye on it

Speak to a GP if anything feels off

Not panic, just prep. Tick awareness is part of good stalking practice.

Roe Doe season is in now and we're getting on top of numbers. These two were particularly challenging in the woods, with only small windows of opportunities to take humane shots through vegetation. The large doe was taken first (15.8kg) then the young (8.8kg),as these were the only shots presented. A quick suspended gralloch where everything looked normal and then both carcasses were delivered to be processed. Rolled haunches covered in beef fat, mince and fillet steaks are the order of the day. The dogs have had the offal and were looking rather pleased with themselves. There's still a few more to be taken from surrounding areas, plus there was a huge Muntjac that bolted across my path then decided to bark at me for 20 minutes as I had disturbed his peace, he and I will catch up another time.

It's back to the books again and always good for a bit of a brush up. I like to keep knowledge up to date (there are certain sections on here that need changing to current legislation), but by and large most things are the same.

Another commercial job where deer are damaging newly planted trees. It was a quick mission in and out of the property and a discreet service as per usual. Both bucks were taken in quick succession and neither knew I was there. The antlers were interesting with the larger ones curling back almost goat like and the smaller with an unusual stub and a unicorn appearance. Both animals were healthy after inspection and are being processed and going into the food chain.

Good evening to this handsome Roe Buck, out on the estate this evening and we bumped into this chap, managed to get within 30ft of him to take some pictures before he decided he'd had enough and went for a wander down the field.

Warning, graphic content.
I had a call this morning that a large breed dog, off lead and no visible owner had attacked a young Roe Buck, the damage to its back legs and the puncture wounds on its neck were horrific, we found chunks of flesh on the path with blood everywhere, there was no coming back.
The message is simple, dog owners, train your dogs, if you can't train them, put them on a lead, if your not confident with them on a lead, muzzle them. If you're still not confident don't have a dog.

Well this was something different, normally we just use the meat as either steaks or mince but the kids all love Biltong so we decided to give it a go. 2.5kg of Haunch steak was cut into strips, a large selection of spices were ground up in the mortar and pestle to go with red wine vinegar, Worcestershire and Soy sauce. This was then left to marinate in the fridge for 24 hours then into the dehydrator where we went for approximately 50% moisture. The end result was I had to vac pack it quickly the next day as the kids were demolishing the lot. I now know what we are doing with the next batch!

Out with the young dog this morning, we saw 5 girls but no boys. He had fun however and flushed a couple of pheasants.
The field edges were soaking wet and I wish I wore my gaiters, but still an amazing morning out and the sunrise was spectacular.

Another deer box ready with delicious burgers, sausages and fillet steaks. However I was made aware of an air rifle pellet found in the back of the deer. It had no signs of distress but it must have been causing some discomfort at some point. It never ceases to upset me that people will use an illegal and unethical calibre on these animals.

Another productive morning out. The mist was thick and humidity was high, we were a bit hesitant but the client was still keen to get out. Fortunately the dog was on form and very quickly picked up on deer. By now most of the mist had cleared and we could see the buck and more importantly a safe backstop. A clean shot later and we had a buck down in the field. Once again very fortunate to have the dog as thermal would have been ineffective in the waist height long grass and the deer was quickly found. The deer was gralloched on site and inspected then quickly dropped off at the chiller ready to be processed into fillet steaks, sausages and burgers.
