👣 Strong Calves = Stronger Steps! 💪🏼

Did you know that a single-leg heel raise is a fantastic exercise to include as we get older? ❤️

Standing on one leg and slowly lifting your heel helps to:

✨ Strengthen your calf muscles

✨ Improve ankle strength and stability

✨ Challenge your balance

✨ Improve the power we use when walking

If a single-leg heel raise feels too challenging, start with both feet together and hold onto a chair for support. You can gradually build up from there. 👣

Remember - we don't need to do complicated exercises to keep our bodies strong. Sometimes the simplest movements are some of the most beneficial! 💪🏼❤️

Strong calves. Strong ankles. Stronger steps. 👣

💕 Goodbye Dolly 💕

A little tribute to the one and only Dolly Parton. 🌸

What a woman, what a voice, and what a legacy. Her music has brought happiness to generations and given us so many songs to sing, dance and smile along to. 🎶💃🏼

Thank you for the memories, the music and all the joy you gave us. ❤️

Rest peacefully, Dolly. You really were one of a kind. ✨

Farewell to the legendary Dolly Parton, who has died, aged 80.

The struggles of being an over 60s fitness instructor… 😂💪

People probably think I just turn up, put some music on and make you all exercise…
If only it was that easy! 😂

There’s actually a LOT going on behind the scenes…

🧠 Remembering the moves… and which move comes next!

🎵 Coming up with the music AND finding moves to go with every song!

👀 Looking around the room and checking all those concentrating faces to make sure everyone is okay and keeping up.

👋 Remembering people’s names… because apparently I’m expected to remember everyone! 😂

🆕 Keeping an eye on the new people and making sure they feel comfortable and know what’s going on.

💪 Checking everyone has the right grip on their bands and is using the equipment safely.

🔄 Making sure I always have an alternative exercise ready for anyone who needs one.

🏋️‍♀️ Carrying all the equipment in and out… and remembering which equipment we’re actually using that day! 😂

⚖️ Watching everyone during balance exercises and making sure people feel safe and confident.

And then there’s the bit you don’t see…
The planning. The thinking. The adapting. The constant scanning of the room.
And occasionally thinking “What on earth was I doing next?!” 🤣

But honestly?

I absolutely love it. ❤️

Because every time you walk through that door, you’re choosing to do something positive for yourself.

You’re choosing to move. You’re choosing to work on your strength, balance, mobility and fitness. You’re choosing to challenge your brain. And most importantly, you’re choosing to have FUN. 🥰

And I honestly can’t put into words how grateful I am that you trust me.

Thank you for believing in me, trusting me to keep you safe, challenging you and hopefully making you smile along the way.

And thank you for creating something even more special than a fitness class…

An incredible community where you look out for each other, encourage each other, laugh together and celebrate each other. ❤️

I might carry the equipment, choose the music and remember the moves…

…but you are the reason I love doing what I do.

Thank you for turning up.Thank you for trusting me.And thank you for believing in me. ❤️

Moving on Up together! ⬆️💪🥰

🍎 Do We Really Need Supplements as We Get Older?

It's a question I get asked in by class member’s…

So I did some research. 🧐

For most people, a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise should always come first.

Eating plenty of protein, fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, healthy fats and staying well hydrated provides your body with the nutrients it needs to keep muscles, bones and your immune system as healthy as possible.

Regular strength, balance and aerobic exercise are just as important. They help maintain muscle, improve bone health, reduce the risk of falls and keep you independent for longer.

That said, supplements can sometimes be helpful. As we get older, it can become harder to get enough of certain nutrients from food alone. Depending on your individual needs, a healthcare professional may recommend supplements such as:

✔️ Vitamin D (particularly during the autumn and winter months in the UK)
✔️ Calcium (if your dietary intake is low)
✔️ Vitamin B12 (especially for some older adults or those following a vegetarian or vegan diet)
✔️ Omega-3 (if you don't eat oily fish)
✔️ Protein supplements if you're struggling to eat enough protein
✔️ Creatine, when combined with strength training, may help support muscle strength in some older adults.

Remember, more isn't always better. Taking supplements you don't need won't necessarily improve your health and, in some cases, can even be harmful.

My advice? Build your health on the basics:

🥗 Eat well.
💪 Keep moving.
🏋️ Strength train regularly.
😴 Get enough sleep.
💧 Stay hydrated.
😊 Stay connected and keep doing the things you enjoy.

Supplements can support a healthy lifestyle, but they can't replace one.

What's one healthy habit you've introduced that's made the biggest difference to how you feel?

I'd love to hear while I’m sat Infront of the fan! 💙

❤️ Functional Fitness: Exercise That Helps You Live Life ❤️

Did you know that every single exercise we do in our Move it or Lose it classes has a purpose?

We don't exercise just to get through an hour together - we exercise to make everyday life easier, safer and more enjoyable.

💪 Stronger legs help you climb the stairs with confidence.

🛒 Better balance helps reduce your risk of falls

🪑 Strong muscles make it easier to get up from a chair

🛍️ Improved strength means carrying shopping bags feels less of a struggle

🚶 Better mobility helps you keep enjoying walks, holidays, gardening and playing with grandchildren

😊 Flexibility makes everyday movements more comfortable

❤️ Cardiovascular fitness helps you have more energy for the things you love

As we get older, staying independent is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. That's why our classes focus on functional fitness. These are movements that support real life, not just exercise for the sake of it.

Every stretch, every balance exercise, every strength movement and every laugh we share is helping you stay active, confident and independent for longer.

Because growing older doesn't mean giving up the things you enjoy - it means training your body so you can keep doing them. 💙

Come and experience the difference for yourself. Your future self will thank you! ☺️
