What happens when you take STEM beyond the classroom and put it right at the heart of the community?

This summer, we brought hands-on STEM to libraries across Coventry, giving children and young people the chance to build, experiment, solve problems and discover where STEM could take them.

Over two months, we ran 15+ sessions across 8 locations, reaching 112 children and young people, alongside 49 parents.

From robotics and civil engineering to power and gravity, the sessions turned everyday community spaces into places to get curious, get hands-on and see STEM differently.

🔹 80% of participants said the sessions increased their interest in Science, Technology or Engineering
🔹 87% wanted to take part in more STEM sessions
🔹 100% of girls said the activities helped them see STEM as something for people like them

This video captures the people, activities and moments that made the pilot possible, and what we learned from taking STEM directly into local communities. A huge thank you to Pictures for the People for capturing the energy and moments that brought the sessions to life.

With thanks to the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 for supporting the delivery of this programme across libraries in Coventry this summer and helping us bring hands-on STEM learning into local communities.

What happens when you bring STEM to where young people already are?

Our community STEM sessions are about more than building circuits, testing ideas and solving challenges. They’re about creating new opportunities for young people to discover STEM in places that feel familiar, accessible and welcoming. And the young people we’ve worked with tell us they want more of it.

“It would be really good to be around more like-minded people.”

For us, community-centred STEM is about opening more doors, reaching young people who might otherwise miss out and creating connected pathways that can grow into a lasting interest in STEM.

We're pleased to launch ⚙️Levelling Up: Engineering⚙️, a new, fully funded initiative connecting universities with local sixth form students who identify as women to help unlock engineering potential.

Developed in partnership with Dr Tony Hill and leading engineering institutions including IChemE, IoM3, IET, IMechE and ICE, the programme supports sustained engagement through a series of academic and enrichment sessions, alongside an on-campus experience.

Together, we'll help more young women explore the breadth of modern engineering, build confidence, and discover how engineering can play a role in tackling some of society's biggest challenges.

Universities across England, Wales and Northern Ireland can now register their interest.

What exactly is a STEM Day?

A STEM Day is a fun, hands-on learning experience that gives students the chance to explore science, technology, engineering and maths through exciting, real-world challenges. Designed for both primary and secondary schools, our one-day, curriculum-linked activities help bring classroom learning to life while building confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Led by our experienced STEM Engagement Specialists, STEM Days can be delivered in person at your school or virtually, making them accessible to schools across the UK. Thanks to the generous support of our funding partners, many of our STEM Days are available to schools at no cost.
