Weight management isn’t just about feeding less.
It’s about managing the whole horse 💚

For many good doers, successful weight control comes down to the combination of nutrition, grazing and forage management, movement and enrichment. Restricting calories may help support weight loss, but keeping horses mentally and physically occupied matters too — especially for those spending more time in stables, on restricted grazing or in smaller turnout areas.

Small management changes can make a big difference:
✔️ Soaking hay and/or using low calorie forage such as straw
✔️ Multiple forage stations to encourage movement
✔️ Small holed haynets or slow feeders to extend eating time
✔️ Toys and enrichment to reduce boredom
✔️ Strip grazing or track systems to encourage more movement
✔️ Regular exercise suited to the individual horse
✔️ Balanced nutrition to support the body systems and long-term wellbeing

When calories are reduced it often results in nutrients being reduced too. Horses and ponies on restricted diets may be lacking essential vitamins, minerals and quality protein needed to support muscle function, hoof quality, immune health and topline.

That’s why feeding a balancer alongside a low-calorie fibre feed can be such a useful option for good doers.

SPILLERS Lite & Lean Balancer is specifically formulated for horses and ponies on calorie restricted diets, providing concentrated nutrition in a small daily feed with very low levels of starch and sugar. You can bulk it out with a handful of low-calorie chaff such as SPILLERS Fibre Lite Molasses Free for added enrichment.

Long periods without forage, overly severe restriction or removing too much from the diet can negatively impact both physical and mental wellbeing. Horses are designed to trickle feed for much of the day, so supporting a ‘little and often’ fibre intake to encourage natural behaviours should be a priority.

Every horse is different too. Age, workload, fitness, health status, grazing access and metabolism can all influence how easily a horse gains or loses weight. What works brilliantly for one horse may not suit another.

Balanced nutrition, appropriate calorie intake, movement and enrichment all work together to help support healthier weight management and happier horses 💜

Gary has been with us for quite some time and is still waiting for someone to give him the second chance he deserves 💔

This handsome 16.1hh gelding is a kind, affectionate horse who loves nothing more than attention, fuss and the occasional treat.

Gary is a pleasure to handle. He stands beautifully for the vet and farrier and has even helped young vets gain experience by calmly allowing them to practise routine procedures such as vaccinations and blood tests.

📍Gary is based at World Horse Welfare Belwade Farm in Aberdeenshire.

Can you offer this lovely boy a home? Find out more and apply for him today 👉 https://bit.ly/4sVKAxN

If you're not in a position to offer Gary a home, sharing this post could help him find the perfect match.

Get Wishing’s time in our care has been supported by, Retraining of Racehorses (ROR), the official charity for the welfare of horses who have retired from racing. 🐴
