With Deepest Regret

Due to Jimmy's deteriorating health it is with deep regret that he cannot continue with the project.

We will email any schools with their own equipment letting them know where they will be able to get fertile eggs.

We will have good condition equipment on sale soon drinkers, feeders etc. Pics will be put up soon to show what is available for anyone looking for a bargain.

This heart breaking decision has not been able to make.

Jimmy would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the years. He has met a lot of lovely people.

A cheap and cheerful bird scarer

Sparrows were wreaking havoc with our garden peas, the other day I looked out of the window only to see a brown boiling mass in our garden peas. On closer inspection it turned out to be a flock of feathered locusts (sparrows really) shreading the flowers and leaves. I popped a net over the plants at 6am yesterday 10 minutes later the winged warriors were back probing the net for gaps which they quickly discovered. It was then a thought struck me, when I was a boy back in the Triassic period my granny used to use the foil tops from milk bottles threaded on to a length of string to keep birds away from her strawberries and other fruit the tops glistened in the sun and sparkled in the breeze frightening the birds. The string can be set at any height by tying each end to a bamboo cane or similar, I tied one of ours from the washing line at onevend and a hanging basket support at the other.
More of these are being made to protect our crops at the school.
Not having foil milk bottle tops I decided to cut a foil survival blanket into segments then cut the segments into 10mm wide strips which can be cut to any length you want. Each of our strips were cut in the middle doubling our total amount. Backing line for a fly reel for fishing was chosen due to its strength of 20lbs test plus the fact that doesn't rot quickly and is very light causing it to react well in a breeze. Loops were formed in the line every 150mm, the choice of gap is yours, strips were fed through the loops until both legs were the same length. This done the strips were stapled together near the loop securing them in position. Everything you will need to make one is in the photograph

The Enchanted Garden

We hope all of our wee pals at Robert Smillie Primary School and Nursery not forgetting Jigsaw House are enjoying their holidays, we know the teachers are.
This is just to let you all know that your plants are being well looked after. Every morning and night the magic fairies visit the school to open up the polytunnel and coldframe. They have also been watering and feeding all of the plants and cutting the grass. One of the fairies has been eating the garden peas that were ready and told us some of the tomatoes will soon be ripe. They sent us these photograps so the boys and girls could see how big some of their plants are getting and how the gardens are looking.

Amir update

Little Amir had her hobbles removed last night and was able to stand right away. It took a little while for her to find her sea legs which was hilarious to watch. She still has the odd wobble but this will soon disappear the more she runs around building up her leg muscles.

Another wee chick for physio

Sometimes when chicks hatch they have splayed legs usually caused by them doing the splits when they try to stand up. We have sponge mats in the bottom of our incubators which normally prevents this happening. We also have a sponge mat in the bottom of our brooder boxes to prevent the chicks from slipping on the plastic surface below.
We recieved a call yesterday from Keir Hardie Primary, Newarthill asking if we could come look at a little chick with a weak hip joint. We collected the little chick which the children had named Amir and brought it home for treatment. A soft hobble was placed on it's legs which helps keep the hip joints in place. The chick was encouraged to push itself up which helps strengthen the hip muscles. Usually after a couple of days the hobbies can come off and the chick is able to stand without falling over. Although wobbly on it's legs initially the wee chicks are soon running around.

Some of the behind the scenes work we do.

The little chick in the vudeo was born with swollen leg joints one of which was leaking which could have led to infection setting in had it not received prompt medical attention. Yesterday Jimmy was at a nursery in Glasgow dropping off an incubator and eggs for the boys and girls at Meiklewood Nursery to hatch before heading straight to Bardykes Farm Nursery in Blantyre to have a look then collect the chick with the inflamed joints. A big thanks to the chick minders for bringing this to our attention so promptly your quick actions have probably saved it's little life.
Jimmy was up all night with wee one after having cleaned the wound to the leg joint and applying iodine. The chick was given water by soaking a cotton bud and allowing the chick to sip water droplets. It was given chick crumb made into a porridge by adding water which it took to readily. This afternoon the chick managed to shuffle itself to the water and feed dishes and was observed eating and drinking.We telephoned the nursery to give them an update on the little chicks progress.

Thank-you Park Drive Nursery Bannockburn

Our week started with a visit to this amazing Nursey accompanied by our dear friend and avid supporter June Gibson. We had visited this nursery last year and like then we received fantastic hospitality from Susan McLaren and the rest of the staff.
After speaking to the morning children we were treated to lunch by Susan who had prepared a massive tray of really tasty sandwiches and a delicious home made sponge cake. We were worried that remaining cake and sannie's would go to waste but the staff made sure that they didn't lol.
Lunch over it was time to meet the afternoon weans and tell them all about their eggs which are Quail eggs this time.Some of the morning children remain for the afternoon and what little sponges they are especially little Jessica who recalled everything from the morning talk upstaging Jimmy lol. Thanks to everyone at Park Drive for a trully great day and fantastic lunch. What made the day more special was the very generous donation of £50.00 in change that June had saved for us. (what a woman!!!) She also donated a 50 metre water hose and reel to help with our school gardening project.

Busy Saturday Night after a Very Busy Week!!

Tonight we delivered 81 chicks safely to the farm. These chicks were picked up from David Livingstone Memorial Primary Blantyre, Machanhill Primary Nursery Larkhall, Dunard Primary Glasgow, Newfield Primary Stonehouse and finally Bankier Nursery Banknock Bonnybridge (phew) 3 incubators were also put into schools and nurseries in Hamilton, Motherwell and Baillieston this week plus the garden project at Robert Smillie Memorial Primary Larkhall, now sitting down to a cuppa before starting all over again tomorrow.

This is why people stop doing voluntary work.

We were sent the following message on our page and would like to know what the writer is insinuating.

At the moment you have eggs now chicks at my sons primary school. I was just curious about what you do with the chicks once you take them back? for example of you have a different policy for the males compared to females for example. The school says you take them back to the farm but from looking at your page it doesn't look like you are a farm. I look forward to your reply. Thanks.

We have copied the message word for word.

In answer to the statement 'The school says you take them back to the farm.........
What the school or nursery are in fact told is. The chicks are taken home then taken to the farm. We have never said they are taken directly to the farm which would be cost prohibitive in fuel as it is approximately a 40 mile round trip. But then again we could increase our price for the project to offset our fuel costs.
In answer to the cockerel question we use a magnet on a thread to s*x our eggs prior to incubation and discard eggs showing male these are eaten at home as they are fresh eggs we also disregard eggs that do not react to the magnet. We have used this method successfully for years.
We have invited the writer to accompany us to the farm this weekend. Whether Graeme allows the access is another matter given the fact that there has been another outbreak of Bird Flu down south are restrictions are back in place.

We also informed the writer that we have been contacted in the past by schools which has The Living Egg in their school and that the school has been left to find homes for the chicks hatched asking if we could take them which we did.
Anyone who knows Jimmy will know his passion for protecting the environment and love of birds, fish, plants and animals and to say he is fuming about the communication is a major understatement.
We checked out the writer's page and judging by what we saw the writer is opposed to many things involving the captivity of animals and birds. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but don't ever question our integrity!
Normally we would have simply answered the writer's questions but this has caused major upset.
