Happy Friday everyone! 🥂 A little still life with Prosecco and raspberries, painted by our Creative Director Sarah Margaret Gibson .

Sarah will be returning to still life this October for a five-day Still Life Painting in Oils workshop here at the Atelier.

Working from life, students will complete three simple still life paintings over the course of the week, exploring composition, colour, observation and paint handling.

October 5th–9th, 2026

A still life study of raspberries by Sarah Margaret Gibson ❤️

This October, Sarah will be teaching a five-day still life painting in oils workshop here at the Atelier.

Students will complete three paintings over five days, working from simple still life arrangements and exploring colour, composition and paint handling.

A glimpse into the early stages of a bird portrait by our Creative Director, Sarah Margaret Gibson 🤎

This September, Sarah will be teaching her only in-person ‘Bird Painting in Oils’ workshop at the Atelier—a five-day intensive devoted to her distinctive approach to painting birds from life.

Working directly from Sarah’s collection of taxidermy birds, students will create two bird portraits over the course of the week, following her process from the initial monochromatic underpainting through to colour, texture and final refinement.

At the heart of Sarah’s approach is the same careful observation she brings to portraiture: looking beyond simply describing feathers and anatomy to capture the individual character, rhythm and sense of life within the bird.

A few moments from last week’s Portrait Painting in Oils workshop with our Creative Director Sarah Margaret Gibson

Over five days, students worked from the live model while exploring a structured approach to portrait painting in oils. Beginning with a reductive underpainting, each painting was gradually developed through the ébauche, first painting pass and refining layers, with every stage building upon the last.

Alongside daily demonstrations, individual critiques and plenty of time at the easel, students developed not only a deeper understanding of the painting process, but a greater appreciation for the careful observation and thoughtful decision-making that lie at the heart of portraiture.

It was a pleasure to watch each painting gradually come to life over the course of the week, and to spend so many hours in the studio with such a dedicated, inquisitive and generous group of students.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our wonderful model Emily Rose for her patience throughout the week. We hope to welcome you all back to the Atelier again soon.

Just two places remain on our upcoming Figure Drawing in Mixed Media workshop with the exceptional Scott Garder .

A graduate and instructor of the Grand Central Atelier, Scott combines rigorous observational drawing with a deep understanding of three-dimensional form, teaching students how to create figure drawings that are both structurally sound and beautifully luminous.

Working from the live model, you’ll learn how to combine graphite, charcoal and white chalk on toned paper to achieve a richness and painterly quality that is difficult to accomplish with graphite alone.
