At Lancaster University there are over 2,100 students studying Science and Technology across a broad range of subjects. Our safe and friendly campus is an exciting place to be, with everything you need on campus, including bars, sports facilities and a cinema. Our College system is a major part of the Lancaster student experience, providing social and study facilities, support and accommodation. There is easy access to the nearby Lake District and Manchester and a direct train line to London, making Lancaster an excellent base for many activities. 🐑🌳 From sheep to forests - who is shaping the future of the Welsh countryside?

New research from Lancaster Environment Centre postgraduate researcher Alex Heffron explores how carbon markets and forestry investment are reshaping rural Wales. As farmland is increasingly purchased for tree planting and carbon offsetting, the study examines the growing influence of large investment firms and the implications for land ownership and the future of Welsh farming communities.

Ultimately, the study asks a very important question: as Wales moves towards a net zero future, who gets to decide how land is used, and who stands to benefit?

A huge congratulations to Lancaster University Mathematics & Statistics's Dr Helen Barnett, who has been appointed as London Mathematical Society Outreach Lecturer for Northern England! 🎉

Over the next two years, Helen will be visiting primary schools across the region encouraging children to engage with maths in an enjoyable way, and see a future for themselves within the world of mathematics. The role focuses particularly on widening participation and helping young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to see maths as something accessible to all.

Congratulations, Dr Barnett, on this fantastic achievement and we wish you every success in the role!

A world warming at different speeds 🌎🌡️

New research involving Lancaster’s Honorary Professor Rebecca Killick from Lancaster University Mathematics & Statistics reveals that global warming is accelerating at different rates across different parts of the globe, with regional speed-ups emerging in distinct waves from the 1980s onwards.

Accelerated warming was particularly evident across parts of the Northern Hemisphere’s mid-latitutudes, including southeast China and the Gulf of Mexico. 🗺️

Is the green energy transition primarily a climate crisis or a cost-of-living crisis? 🌎⚡️📰

New research from Lancaster’s Dr Yingnian Tao and Dr Mark Ryan suggests the answer may depend on which newspaper you read!

Analysing more than 3,000 articles published between 2015 and 2024, the researchers found clear differences in how left- and right-leaning newspapers engage with the issue. Whilst left-leaning coverage focused more on climate and environmental degradation, right-leaning coverage placed greater emphasis on the economic costs of the transition and energy security.

Despite these differences, newspapers across the political spectrum largely shared a belief in technological solutions, with alternatives such as lifestyle change and degrowth receiving little attention.

For the latest STEMMing the Leaky Pipeline blog, we had the pleasure of speaking with Nicholas Bramah, a final-year PhD student in Lancaster Engineering.🎓

Nick’s research focuses on nuclear fuel reprocessing and finding ways to make better use of spent nuclear fuel that would otherwise be destined for disposal. Alongside discussing his work, he also spoke openly about his experiences of being autistic, the challenges he faced throughout education, and the support that helped him grow in confidence as a scientist.

It was a fascinating conversation about STEM, neurodiversity, and the importance of understanding the individual behind the label.

Volcanic eruptions at Mount Garibaldi (Nch’kay̓) are rare, with thousands of years potentially passing between eruptions. But understanding the potential impacts of future events is an important part of long-term emergency planning. 🌋

Dr Thomas Jones and Dr Sara Osman from Lancaster Environment Centre have helped produce the first-ever volcanic ashfall hazard map for Canada's highest-threat volcano, working alongside partners from the Canadian Federal Government.

Using thousands of computer simulations and two decades of atmospheric data, the team modelled how volcanic ash could spread during different eruption scenarios. The resulting hazard map covers a region home to around 6.6 million people and will help authorities better understand and prepare for future risks.

How can AI help us understand a changing planet? 🌎

Researchers have used machine learning and satellite imagery to create the first ice-sheet-wide record of slush across Greenland, revealing that this often-overlooked feature is the largest mapped surface meltwater feature of the ice sheet. 🧊

The study, authored by Lancaster PhD researcher Emily Glen, supervised by Lancaster Environment Centre researchers Dr Amber Leeson, Dr Katie Miles and Professor Mal McMillian, provides new insights into how meltwater is stored and transported across Greenland as the climate warms. 🌡️

Lancaster University is launching a new 'Food for Nature and Society’ doctoral training programme to tackle our contemporary food system crises 🌎 🌱

Food is central to our health and communities. Yet the systems that produce it are driving biodiversity loss and climate change, whilst healthy diets are increasingly unaffordable, and many food workers face poor conditions.

Although these challenges are often addressed separately, they are deeply interconnected and tackling them requires new ways of thinking that can bridge disciplines.

Benefitting from £5 million of funding from the Leverhulme Trust, the programme will support 30 fully funded PhDs over seven years. From sustainable fisheries and drought-resistant crops to regenerating soils, improving access to healthy foods, and supporting fairer work, the programme will bring together expertise from across disciplines to explore how food systems can enable nature to thrive and equitable societies to flourish. 🐟🌿

This time, we were lucky enough to follow Electronics Technicians Ashley and Lucy around Lancaster Physics, exploring the nuts, bolts, and circuit boards behind some of the uni's most exciting research 👨‍🔬👩‍🔬⚡️

From custom-built electronics and quantum nanotechnology, to pioneering memory technologies and even the search for dark matter, it was fascinating to see the incredible range of research projects happening across the department - and the vital role technicians play in making them possible! 🥼🔭
