There has been growth in scholarly and popular interest in atheism, humanism and secularism in the UK in recent years, but conferences and seminars have tended to focus upon how to study ‘non-religion’ or debates with religion.

'I don't do anything because I'm an atheist.' Atheism involves positive as well negative beliefs, but what do you do about it?

However, negative encounters with particular religious individuals - be they members of the extended family or the Christian Union on campus - formed part of interviewees' stories about their atheism. People disapproved of religion being 'rammed down their throats', with evangelical Christians coming in for particular criticism.
