Bay Fusion

Thank you to all those who attended our event last week at The Whitworth Gallery in Manchester.

We were joined by a number of speakers from UK Atomic Energy Authority, First Light Fusion and Lancaster University who helped the audience learn more about fusion science, combating climate change, projects around the world bringing fusion to life and how fusion can create clean energy and electricity!

There were lots of interesting questions from the audience as well as tea, coffee and cake!

Today we visited United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority at Culham, Oxford as part of the 10th UKAEA Supplier's Event.

Some exciting developments going on as well as the latest news on the UK's ambitious programme to create the world's first fusion power plant - STEP - crucial for net zero. We took a tour around site and saw some awesome technology - some of which developed by specialists in Lancaster !

Bay Fusion continues to represent our north west regional aspiration to take part in the growing global fusion industry and support the construction of STEP in the UK. With excellent opportunities for academia, business, skills development and employment opportunities in the sector the future is exciting !

Our evening event for the general public is co-hosted by the IET and IMechE - with speakers from Bay Fusion, UKAEA and Tokamak Energy - and is suitable for all ages including young people interested in learning more about fusion energy.

Want to learn more about fusion, what it means for the global fight against climate change and the recent STEP announcement ? Join us on 3rd November at Lancaster University for an evening of talks co-hosted by the IET and IMechE.

With speakers from Bay Fusion, UKAEA and Tokamak Energy, the session will introduce fusion energy, the state of the global industry and the most recent developments in the UK and north west - including the recent UKAEA STEP announcement by UK Government to build a prototype fusion power plant by 2040. There will also be a talk about future jobs and careers in fusion.

Congratulations to West Burton A in Nottinghamshire on winning the STEP competition. EDF, who own the site, previously operated a coal fired power station on the site. Matt Sykes, managing director of EDF's Generation business, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the UKAEA has selected the West Burton site in Nottinghamshire to host the UK's first fusion reactor.

Bay Fusion earlier proposed Heysham, initially supported by EDF, as a potential site for UKAEA STEP and was successful in reaching the last few 15 sites of a huge number nominated across the UK.

We look forward to seeing future plans for fusion technology development in the UK and have some exciting news to share soon around our future plans to support the UK fusion sector with a cluster focused around the north west !

Site of UK’s first fusion energy plant selected West Burton power station site in Nottinghamshire has been selected as the home for the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant.

We know it's been a while, but we're happy to announce that Bay Fusion has won a placement competition from UKAEA enabling a new new team member to join us - Nathan! This competition is part of the £2.3million UKAEA Fusion Industry Programme (FIP) to help accelerate the growth of the UK’s fusion industry.

This award will help us continue our journey supporting the development and industrialisation of fusion tech in Morecambe Bay and the north west of England.

Season's Greetings from the Bay Fusion Team!

2021 has been a year of up's and down's - however with fusion technology and global investment in its development booming (with over $2.4billion injected globally past month!), 2022 will be exciting for sure - and we hope to stay a part of it ! More news in the new year !

We are sorry to announce that Bay Fusion has received news that we have not reached the shortlist for the UKAEA STEP siting competition.

This is very disappointing, however, after a review of our nomination with UKAEA we are confident we did all we could for our entry and ultimately it came down to us being in the running alongside a number of other high quality sites in the UK with larger areas of land available for STEP. Our skills base, partnership for delivery, transport and utilities infrastructure were all highly ranked, and we hope to move forward from here in collaboration with stakeholders to find other potential opportunities.

We also wish to further support and showcase our excellent regional supply chain to the global fusion industry and we are looking for more companies to join a growing cluster of businesses keen to support fusion. This morning we are doing an impromptu talk "How to Build a Fusion Power Station - A Beginners Guide" as part of the Lancashire Innovation Festival 2021.

This will be a high level overview and will briefly talk about fusion technology and how the UK intends to build STEP as a blueprint for future power stations.

We intend to have a more in-depth event in the coming weeks so stay tuned if you can't make it!

As the global race to crack fusion hots up, the UK Government has announced its Fusion Strategy. This details how the UK will use its world leading expertise to deliver the commercialisation of decades of UK fusion scientific development. This will ultimately result in the construction of STEP - a prototype fusion power station - which we hope could be sited in Heysham.

In addition they aim to be the first Government in the world to create laws to help the roll-out of fusion power technology in the UK.
