Congratulations to Dr Jocelin Lingxia Zhou, Lancaster University Confucius Institute Teaching Lead and Programme Lead for Chinese Studies in Languages and Global Cultures, School of Global Affairs at Lancaster University, for being elected as the new chair of the British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS). 🎉

BCLTS is the leading professional organisation supporting Chinese language teaching, learning and research across the UK.

The Society brings together educators, researchers and practitioners from schools, colleges and universities to promote excellence in Chinese language education and foster professional collaboration.

Have you ever wondered why Chinese tea has been treasured for thousands of years? What makes it so special compared to the tea we drink every day? Join us this Saturday, 1.30-3.00pm, in Lancaster Central Library for the opportunity to taste authentic Chinese tea and learn the basic techniques of tea appreciation, using your senses to explore its aroma, colour and flavour.

'Emotional Regulation from the Perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine' with Dr Mingyue Li. All welcome.

⏰ Thursday 18 June, 12.00-1.00pm
📍 Open research lab and digital scholarship lab, Lancaster University Library

The talk will cover:
🟡 The physiological and pathological relationships between human emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, sorrow, fear, shock) and the five zang-organs (heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney).
🟡 TCM care for anxiety, depressive emotions, and test syndrome.
🟡 Coordinating the heart and brain, enhancing memory, improving learning efficiency, and enjoying a calm state of mind.

Mingyue Li is an Associate Professor in the College of Acupuncture and Tuina, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Students from two of Lancaster University Confucius Institute’s teaching sites are participating in the 18th Chinese Calligraphy Competition 2026, organised by the UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education.

This year marks the first participation of Anchorsholme Primary Academy in the national competition, while Hawes Side Academy is returning following its outstanding success in 2025.

On 8 May 2026, Lancaster University Confucius Institute was proud to host the world premiere of Ulverston filmmaker Steve Wharton's compelling documentary about John Barrow's trip to China towards the end of the 18th century.

The Confucius Institute welcomed around 50 guests to a special screening of Voyage East at Lancaster University, bringing together students, staff and members of the local community for an evening exploring the historical relationship between Britain and China.
