We have been asked to share this message from Lancaster Priory about a community event taking place this week:
The "Loving Lancaster" programme at Lancaster Priory takes place this week, reaching a climax at the weekend with a Priory Choir performance in Market Square from 1.30pm on Saturday and special events inside the Priory all day on Sunday. It is part of the centenary celebration for Blackburn Diocese, and coincides with two weeks of Heritage Open Days throughout Lancaster and Morecambe.
As part of the programme, during the week, people throughout the Priory parish are being invited to contribute to a community art project which, by Sunday, will have produced an art installation of 1000 individual candles in jars, each one decorated with a label, each one representing a personal prayer, or hope, or value, or commitment to work for a better world (from "bless our city" to "be kind to one another" - and beyond). People have been collecting jars for weeks. Everyone who takes part gets to choose a jar, decorate and tie on a label, and add their candle - and all 1000 jars will be on display in the Priory in a vast installation all day on Sunday.
All the children in school will have the opportunity to create a label and tie it to a jar on Friday this week. All materials will be provided in school. Parents can create a jar as well at the end of the school day if they wish. There are also opportunities at Marsh Community Centre and outside Spar and elsewhere on Friday, in the city centre in Market Square on Saturday, and in the Priory on Sunday.
The Priory parish includes the Marsh, Fairfield and the city centre.
Lancaster Priory is the church next to the Castle. It was founded in 1094 on a site going back to Roman times.
