You can read about listening, trust and therapeutic relationships. But how do those skills develop when another person is sitting in front of you?

Practical experience is an important part of becoming a counsellor. Ayurva Academy’s Integrative Counselling Theory and Practice qualification includes a supervised placement, during which students complete at least 100 hours of formally contracted counselling with a minimum of five different clients.

The placement takes place within an agency setting, where students work within an established service framework and receive clinical supervision.

It is an opportunity to begin connecting classroom learning with real conversations, real responsibilities and the professional standards expected of a practising counsellor.

How can we sit with someone else’s story without understanding what our own story may bring into the room?

Training to become a counsellor involves more than studying theories or practising communication techniques. It also requires reflection, self-awareness and a willingness to examine your own development.

The Level 4 course encourages students to consider how counselling theory and practice affect their relationships, responses and understanding of themselves. Reflective practice then helps students connect that personal learning with the way they work professionally.

This does not mean counsellors must have everything neatly figured out. It means developing the awareness to recognise what belongs to the client, what may belong to the counsellor and how to work thoughtfully and ethically with both.

Ayurva Academy’s Integrative Counselling Theory and Practice Level 4 course is a two-year, part-time qualification designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies needed to work as a therapeutic counsellor.
Students prepare for counselling work within an agency setting through their clinical placement, with the opportunity to progress towards independent practice once qualified.

The next course begins this September, with teaching delivered one day per month through face-to-face sessions in Blackpool and online learning.
