🎵 It’s that time of year that my students and I start discussing whether they’d like to take part in a Music Festival! 🎵

In the three years my students have been entering for Festivals, they’ve done absolutely brilliantly: between them, they’ve taken home over seven gold trophies, six silver trophies, and numerous bronze / merit / ‘commended’ awards 🤩

I wonder what this year will bring?!

I’ll be emailing my piano families with more information very soon!

You know what? It’s not just about the notes.

When we include learning a musical instrument as part of our journey… well, it’s hard to put into words the INCREDIBLE growth we experience on a personal level through learning to play music.

We learn so much: resilience, patience, self-discipline… what it means to commit to something and really see it through… patience, perseverance, and adaptability when things don’t quite go to plan (which includes being kind to ourselves!)… self-expression and creativity…. focus, concentration, listening skills… teamwork, planning, time-management, goal-setting… learning to pace yourself and learning what works (and doesn’t work!) for you…

[Side note: we never stop learning, either!]

The list goes on! What else could we add? I’d love to hear your thoughts ☺️

This ⬇️ BUT don’t just repeat, repeat, repeat…

A good teacher will show you lots of brilliant practice strategies for meaningful progress, to suit your learning style, and to keep things varied and fun!

It’s also crucial that teachers are teaching healthy technique early on - to avoid bad habits, and unnecessary tension, which have a massive impact on the sound we create.

We know when a piece feels ‘mastered’ - when we feel that ‘ease’, and sense of ‘flow’ when we play ☺️

And by the way - the odd slip doesn’t matter that much - it’s how you recover from it that matters more 😉

One of the exciting things coming up this term is my next Student Café Concert at Priscilla's Kitchen, East Garston 💕

It’s a lovely, gentle introduction to performing - perfect for anyone who feels those performance nerves (we all do, from time to time, by the way!), or for those wishing to have a run-through of their piece before an exam / competition, in front of a supportive audience.

The cake definitely helps 🍰😉

☔️ Since it’s now raining… I thought it’d be apt to dig out some relevant weather-inspired repertoire… ☔️

Here’s Chopin’s ‘Raindrop Prelude’ - infinitely beautiful! I loved playing through this at home in the studio yesterday evening. Very atmospheric with the rain outside! 💕☔️

(It then got dark, so I had to move on to the Nocturnes, obvs! 🤷‍♀️)
