✨Yoga in the New Year ✨

Resolutions, goals, dreams, the things that keep us driven, passionate, eager for life. These ambitions should most definitely be remembered and reflected upon often, to keep us living a value based life, where we feel like we are aligned and on the right track.

That being said, the beginning of the year can have a pressurising presence.
So can you use your Yoga practice to be an influencing antidote to soothe, settle and centre you. Accepting and trusting where you are in your life.

I leave most of my resolution setting for Spring time - a time of growth, a stirring of energy in the natural world, that is often mirrored in us humans! Maybe this resonates with you too, maybe you go a little gentler on yourself, January is the depth of winter, light is seeping back in but its still absolutely ok to be taking things slower and to be prioritising rest.

✨Yoga for Focus ✨

Yoga classes have many forms, styles and expressions, but a common thread, in any class you might step into, is that it will be steered toward recentering your attention inward.
Time on the mat is for tuning out from the outside world which predominantly consumes us. We are all too often overstimulated and as a result, desensitised. But on the mat, we notice sensations, we become aware of our bodies and notice how good movement, breath work and restorative postures can feel. We recognise how rewarding it is to take an hour for ourselves to disconnect from external noise.

So allow your Yoga practice to be meditation - training our minds and body to think and move mindfully, finding clear focus, and heightened awareness. Leaving our practice with more clarity, conviction and calm!

✨ Yoga Nidra ✨

I always end our classes with a guided relaxation, often called Yoga Nidra ( Yoga Sleep). It’s always the most anticipated part of the class- who doesn’t love soothing music and lying down with a blanket!

The best thing about it however, is that there are so many benefits to this relaxation…

Yoga Nidra is a form of NSDR ( Non Sleep Deep Rest)

💫NSDR is becoming recognised as one of the most powerful and crucial practices for supporting mental and physical health!

💫This state you can enter during Yoga Nidra, is your brain functioning in a Delta frequency, something that typically only occurs during our deepest sleep. What’s more, many of us never enter delta frequency on a day-to-day basis, even during a night’s sleep. In fact, in our busy world full of constant stimulation it is rare that we experience delta frequencies at all.

💫 Rest for our bodies is crucial - during these periods of very low brain frequency function, we have significantly decreased cortisol, our body therefore relaxes, we can improve knowledge retention, and allow physiological & physical healing to occur.

💫 By allowing your brainwaves to slow down, this practice communicates to both your brain and body that it’s okay to relax, to let go, to allow your nervous system to rest and function parasympathetically, and to step out of the fight-flight sympathetic state in which we all function most of the time.

✨Yoga in Spring ✨

The themes for my classes have been reflecting the elements of Spring... Yoga for building energy, Yoga for Embracing Change and challenge. We have been finding new movement and poses, new connection to our practice and taking time to notice growth within our Yoga practice.

So with your Yoga practice this Spring can you attempt to enjoy the ebbs and flow of energy within the class, embracing the challenging moments when the pace of our Yoga flow quickens and revelling in the slow unwinding moments equally.

Finding a sense of play within our practice can help shape the way you consider certain poses and transitions, encouraging you to find more acceptance in the physical parts you find difficult, adopting a playful mindset, exploring your bodies potential and ultimately experiencing more joy in Yoga ….which is always a good thing!!
