Fidgets is a day-care & sessional Nursery and Forest School in rural Lamberhurst, Kent. They support them to gain new skills and knowledge.

Fidgets is located in the rural village of Lamberhurst, Kent. We are conveniently located a few minutes from the A21, and ten minutes from Royal Tunbridge Wells. We provide day care for up to five days a week for

children between the ages of 3 months to 5 years, with daily Forest School sessions. NEW for September 2021 we now also offer spaces in an entirely outdoor Forest School 'room' two days a week.

March update: What is going on in the rooms

Everyone is gearing up for a week of litter picking after pledging to clear up the local village for The Great British Spring Clean this week. For more information about how you can get involved follow the link: https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/

The Baby & Toddler room have been watching the development of some caterpillars they have. They have been growing very fast and are close to becoming cocoons. Linking to this they have been reading The Hungry Caterpillar and taking part in caterpillar themed activities with lots of sensory and outdoor play.

The Kindie Room have been planting and growing vegetables from seed to transplant in the garden. They currently have some bean sprouts, which has supported their understanding of the plant life cycles. They have been reading “Cedric the seed” and “Jasper’s Beanstalk” to extend their learning on this topic.

The Preschool Room took part in some junk modelling last week, using their creative thinking skills and imagination to combine different recycled materials. They have been decorating their own Anti-litter posters which have been displayed around the garden fences ahead of their own litter picking efforts this week.

Last week the children all made their own shamrock wands using recycled cardboard, and searched for 4 leaf clovers for St Patrick’s Day, celebrated by one of our friends. We also noticed a sneaky mouse had made it’s home in one of the storage boxes so investigated it’s nest for quite a while! As this term we are looking at how things grow, the children helped wheelbarrow compost into our planter ready to get growing after Easter!

What we’ve been up to over the past couple of wet weeks!

The Baby Room have been experimenting with textures, combining a range of messy substances together to observe any changes. E.g. cornflour and shaving foam. There has been an interest in playing with the animals and small world figures this week and we have been building towers with various building blocks and open-ended resources.

The Kindie Room created a guttering system in the garden to replicate their own river. They used our mud kitchen containers to transport water from the many puddles outside to feed their river. Inside they have been testing their balance and gross motor skills with an obstacle course with the pop up tunnels, wobble boards and sensory stepping stones.

The Preschool Room have been challenging themselves with various puzzles and games such as bingo. They took part in a rhyming gameshow this week to develop their vocabulary followed by one of the now famous preschool puppet shows!

The Forest School Room have been embracing the wet conditions and went on a puddle hunt this week, inspired by their love of the book “We’re going on a bear hunt”. They managed to find long wavy grass, thicky oozy mud and a big dark forest, but no swirling whirling snowstorms on this occasion!

Day 3 of our staff professional development breakdown...

Level 5 EARLY YEARS LEAD PRACITIONER

Alicia is nearing completion of her Level 5 qualification and will then progress onto a top-up course leading to a full BA (Hons). She is currently working on a research project exploring resilience, focusing on the premise that children who access both outdoor and indoor provision demonstrate greater resilience than those who attend indoor-only settings. This closely aligns with our Forest School approach and is being supported by extensive child observations and independent research.

The course also includes a leadership and management component, which has further developed Alicia’s role as Kindie Room Leader, with a strong emphasis on role modelling and mentoring within the staff team.

Day 2 of our staff professional development breakdown...

Level 2 & 3 EARLY YEARS EDUCATOR Apprenticeships

Tianna, Lily, Amy, and Emily are nearing completion of their Early Years apprenticeships, with Tianna progressing on to further training afterward. The EYFS statutory framework requires staff to hold specific qualifications to meet child-to-staff ratios, and on-the-job training plays a vital role in meeting these standards. This approach allows learners to gain hands-on experience working with children alongside their independent study. Level 3 training, in particular, explores child development theories and research to strengthen practitioners’ understanding.

Emily has also recently completed a six-week Enhancing Outdoor Learning course, enabling her to make positive improvements in how the Kindie Room supports children by better linking indoor and outdoor learning experiences.

Ongoing professional development has always been a priority for us as a setting. Many members of our team regularly update their qualifications and undertake training in new areas of education. This week, we will be sharing more insight into the work our staff are doing behind the scenes to further support and enrich your children’s learning and development:

First up - our FOREST SCHOOL provision

In 2025, Fidgets became an ITC First–recognised provider for delivering Level 3 Forest School Leader training. Alex leads this programme as our trainer, having completed the required assessor qualification earlier in the year. Jenny is currently midway through a Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance qualification, enabling her to quality assure assessments and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.

In November, Lillie, Emily, and Jo began their Level 3 Forest School training. They are progressing through their practical sessions, developing skills in safe tool and rope use, woodland crafts, and underpinning theory. They have also completed a 16 hour Outdoor 1st aid course. By increasing the number of qualified Forest School leaders, we aim to further strengthen our provision and extend high-quality Forest School experiences to all children across the setting.

Happy New Year everyone!

Our first week back after the holidays has been a cold one to say the least with lots of snow and ice to explore. The children in general have been problem solving how to break ice in the garden and making the most of the weather by creating their own ice window experiments and using the ice to inform their imaginative play in our mud kitchens.

This term our care & education plan's topic across all the rooms is "Changes" so we have been observing the changes in weather after a milder December, and noticing the affects the ice is having on our environment.

We have been enjoying everyone's tales from their holidays and hope everyone had a restful break.

Activity Spotlight:

When: 24th November, 2025
Who: The Forest School Room
Why: Chalks were provided as an optional activity to support the children’s fine/gross motor control & early writing skills, including creative thinking.

Activity:
Four children began exploring the chalk by making marks on the wooden table. They were each independently taking part on their own section using different colours. Emily began commenting on the different marks - their shapes and patterns, asking open ended questions which prompted the children to explain what they were drawing. One child said they were drawing a green monster. This drew the others into the conversation, talking about the monsters characteristics. Emily queried what other things could be green, encouraging the children to think of a range of green animals/objects, culminating in a long group chat about frogs. Following this discussion the children led some joint story telling where they combined their drawings to make a collaborative narrative for the monster picture - a pink line was drawn which because a barrier the monster could not cross, for example.

Outcome:
All four children were thoroughly absorbed in this activity for well over 20 minutes. The adult facilitated the extension of the activity but it was very led by the children. Despite a range of different ages and vocal abilities all of the children were included and added elements to the story telling through their marks. A really productive child initiated activity which extended across a large part of their play that afternoon.
