How did you get to where you are now? Was it a straight or wiggly line?

No matter what path we choose the greatest tool we have to support through the ups and downs of wiggly lines is our brain.

Prioritising mental fitness is how we prepare for our future wiggly lines 💓😁

It’s the little things that count; a smile, holding a door, helping a colleague, messaging a friend.
These little things give you a boost, as well as the person you’re showing the kindness towards. So if you’re feeling a little slumped, a little kindness can help.

Anyone else experienced this after pledging a new year’s resolution? There’s a reason….

The pesky inner chimp area of our thinking mind.

The chimp wants us to avoid risk at all cost and guess what, new things are 'unknown' to the chimp and it thinks there could be risk there.

So you can feel better knowing that there is a part inside all of us that doesn’t want to break out of old routines… even if these are unhelpful routines!

The good news is we don't have to listen to it. We can always choose which thoughts we follow and by building self awareness of the unhelpful behaviours and thoughts the chimp drives in us, this becomes easier and we can persist to replace unhelpful routines with empowering new habits.

Tools like mindful breathwork, micro journaling and affirmations are scientifically proven to support us here.

If you want a place to try these tools, so you can’t stop being deflated after giving up on new habits, and start making impactful change, The Pocket Mentor mental fitness toolkit is for you.

Protecting ourselves from mistakes is the worst thing we can do for our resilience.

I understand why you might want to avoid mistakes, because we've likely been brought up with an 'avoidance mindset' that mistakes are bad, embarrassing or are a weakness, and we might want to protect the kids in our care from experiencing this too.

But, this is like trying to make toast but refusing to put the bread in a toaster... Weird analogy I know, but the toaster is crucial to the process of the bread coming out as toast!

Mistakes are our toaster! To build resilience and persist through the inevitable challenges we'll face in life, we NEED to make mistakes...and often!

Resilience is a muscle that is built through making mistakes.

If nothing changes in our approach towards mistakes, then we‘ll end up with a society that are overwhelmed by challenges, are flummoxed by mistakes and are unable to cope at all when bigger life setbacks inevitably hit. This has a big impact on productivity, absence and happiness.

We can either stick to avoiding mistakes and be flummoxed when life challenges hit, or start approaching mistakes as an inevitable part of life showing us opportunities for progress.

What’s your view on mistakes?

That’s all well and good but HOW do we control worries about potential rain?

Taken from one of our CBT Mindset Boosts on the The Pocket Mentor | Mental Fitness], ask these questions to your worry:

- is there any substantial evidence supporting this worry?

- What’s an alternative view?

- What would I say to a friend in this situation?

- Am I attempting to interpret this situation without all the evidence?

For the full benefits of a calmer more present mind and to pivot to more helpful thoughts try the full exercise on the The Pocket Mentor | Mental Fitness]
