Choosing where to learn to fly? Price is only part of the answer.

We were interested to read AERLO’s recent guide to choosing a UK flying school, not least because POM Flying Club at Humberside Airport is one of the schools listed on their site.

One point particularly resonated with us: where you learn matters.

We regularly meet students who initially shopped around on hourly price, only to move to POM later because of aircraft availability, continuity of training or simply the people and environment in which they were learning.

The cheapest hourly rate isn’t necessarily the cheapest route to a PPL. If you can’t get an aircraft or instructor when you need one, or long gaps mean spending valuable flying time relearning what you covered previously, the apparent saving can disappear remarkably quickly.

There is another advantage to learning at Humberside Airport which is harder to put a price on: confidence.

Humberside is a controlled airport with professional Air Traffic Control. From the beginning, our students become accustomed to talking to controllers, obtaining clearances, using the correct radio procedures and operating alongside other traffic. These aren’t occasional exercises, they become part of normal flying.

Interestingly, instructors at schools elsewhere tell us that pilots who learn entirely outside controlled airspace can sometimes be reluctant to enter it after gaining their licence. It can appear complicated and intimidating simply because it is unfamiliar.

For our students, it isn’t unfamiliar. It’s what they have done from day one.
That matters if you want a PPL simply for the freedom and pleasure of flying. It matters even more if your PPL is intended to be the first step towards a commercial flying career.

With G-BPOM and G-SELB, PPL training and the opportunity to progress to Night and IR(R) training, our aim isn’t simply to get someone through the skills test. It is to develop confident pilots who are comfortable taking an aircraft beyond their home airfield and making full use of the licence they have worked hard to achieve.

If you’re considering learning to fly, AERLO’s guide is worth reading, and when comparing schools, perhaps ask yourself a slightly different question:
Not just “how much does an hour cost?” but “what sort of pilot will I be when I’ve finished?”

Two passes in one day, and one very significant achievement. ✈️

Congratulations to Luke Thomas, who earlier this week passed both his General Flight Test (GFT) and radio exam on the same day.

The GFT is the culmination of all those hours of training, putting the skills, judgement and airmanship developed along the way to the test. A great result and thoroughly deserved.

Well done, Luke, from everyone at POM Flying Club.

Why This Has Been a Great Summer at POM Flying Club

There has been a lot to celebrate at POM Flying Club recently.

In the last few weeks alone we have seen another student earn a Private Pilot Licence, others complete their Solo Cross Country Qualifying Flight, and our latest 16-year-old student take to the skies alone for the very first time.

Each achievement is different, but they all represent the same thing, progress.

Every qualified pilot started with a first lesson. Every first solo began with an instructor saying, “Today, you’re ready.” Every PPL holder once wondered whether they could really do it.

Flying isn’t just about learning to operate an aircraft. It’s about building confidence, judgement and skills that develop with every hour in the air. There is no shortcut, only the satisfaction that comes from earning every milestone along the way.

Perhaps the most rewarding part for our instructors is watching that transformation. Students arrive with curiosity and a little apprehension. They leave having achieved something many people only ever dream about.

✈️ First Solo for 16-year-old Matthew Collins!

Congratulations to Matthew Collins, who today achieved one of the most memorable milestones in any pilot’s journey, his first solo flight.

At just 16 years old, Matthew took to the skies alone for the first time, demonstrating the knowledge, skill and confidence required to safely operate an aircraft without his instructor on board.

A first solo is far more than a circuit of the airfield; it is recognition that a student has reached the standard expected to fly safely and independently. It is an achievement that every pilot remembers for the rest of their life.

Everyone at POM Flying Club is delighted for Matthew and congratulates him on this significant accomplishment. We look forward to following his progress towards his Private Pilot Licence.

✈️ Another Flying Milestone at POM Flying Club!

Congratulations to Luke Thomas, who has successfully completed his Solo Cross-Country Qualifying Flight in G-SELB.

The qualifying cross-country flight is a major milestone in a student pilot’s training. Flying alone, Luke was responsible for planning and completing the route, navigating between airfields and making safe decisions throughout the flight.

It is a significant step towards gaining his Private Pilot Licence and reflects the commitment, confidence and flying skills he has developed during his training.

Everyone at POM Flying Club congratulates Luke on this excellent achievement. Well done Luke, the PPL skills test is now firmly in sight!

🎉 Congratulations to our newest Private Pilot! ✈️

Everyone at POM Flying Club is delighted to congratulate Patrick Waddison on successfully passing his Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Skills Test.

Earning a PPL is no small achievement. It represents months of dedication, study, practical training and determination, culminating in the skills and confidence to take command of an aircraft safely.

Patrick’s success is a testament not only to his hard work and commitment, but also to the excellent instruction and support provided by our flying instructors throughout his training.

We are proud to welcome Patrick to the ever-growing community of qualified POM pilots and look forward to seeing where his flying journey takes him next.

It’s been another successful week at POM Flying Club, with two students successfully completing their Cross Country Qualifier flights.

This is a major milestone in pilot training and an important step towards achieving a Private Pilot’s Licence.

The forecast said blue skies… but this is April, so of course it had other ideas!

G-BPOM set off this morning under a layer of low cloud, with the weather doing exactly as it pleased. But that’s all part of flying, learning to handle changing conditions safely and confidently.

As the morning went on, things improved. The cloud lifted, the sun came through, and after completing the service, the aircraft is now back at Humberside Airport, ready for our students and members.

That’s the beauty of aviation: every flight is different, and every challenge makes you better.
