Well, that’s a wrap on session 2025/26! We closed the day with our usual whole school assembly where we were played in by the fabulous Hadhirgaan, said farewell and thank you to those staff leaving us, presented our new House Captains with their badges… and Fara with the House Cup 💙🏆💙
We then had a special treat from our amazing Advanced Higher musicians who gave a live rendition of our usual end-of-session exit music…Happy holidays and we will see you in August!

We said a fond farewell to our Guidance Manager, Mrs Marlyn Firth, today as she retires after many years of service to education in Orkney. As you can see, we are not alone in thinking she’s pretty special…! We wish her a long and happy retirement and many thanks for all she has done to support young people, families and staff.

Senior Volleyball Festival

On Monday 29th of June pupils from both KGS and Stromness Academy competed in a S4-S6 volleyball festival at The Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall.

The quality of volleyball on display from everyone was excellent and was very good practice for our senior teams as we head towards competing in the Scottish Schools Cup after the summer.

It was the boys from Stromness Academy who claimed victory for the day after going undefeated in all 6 of their matches with one of the KGS boys teams coming in a very close 2nd place.

Thank you to the staff at The Pickaquoy Centre for hosting us today and a massive thank you to Trek & Travel and to The Daily Scoop for sponsoring the brand new kit which the pupils will be wearing when they compete in the Scottish Schools Cup!

Robbie Cant, one of OIC's Marine Environmental Unit Technicians, came along today to speak to our N5 Laboratory Science students. He explained the various ways by which the unit monitors the waters around Orkney and showed us some of the techniques used in sampling and analysis. Everyone particularly enjoyed viewing the marine life through the microscope. A big thanks to Robbie for giving up his time to speak to us; we think he found coming back to his old school a bit of a treat too!

Poet & advocate for Scots Language, Len Pennie, visited the school today as part of the St. Magnus Festival. Senior pupils studying English enjoyed a reading of some of her poems and a Q&A, in which she spoke with great candour and humour about her life and work. What a treat! Thank you to Len and the St. Magnus Festival team!
