As an experienced art teacher, I am passionate about providing opportunities for everyone to explore and learn a wide range of arts and crafts, without the expense of having to invest in all the materials yourself. With 8 years of experience working in an SEN school, I have developed a deep understanding of how to create engaging and inclusive learning experiences that are tailored to each student

's needs. Based in Castle Douglas, I am committed to making art classes and workshops accessible to more people in the Dumfries and Galloway region. My mobile teaching approach allows me to work in a variety of venues, including private parties, festivals, and community groups. I also love collaborating with other local businesses to provide unique and exciting opportunities for workshops within their venues. At Little Miss Vaughan Art Classes and Workshops, my goal is to help my students learn and sample a wide range of arts and crafts, without the need to invest in all the materials yourself. Whether you want to try your hand at painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, or any other form of art, I am here to guide and support you every step of the way. I am proud to be associated with Outback Yarns in Castle Douglas, and I believe that creativity and community go hand in hand. We are so excited to be bringing across NorthStone Art & Jewellery - Creative Workshops for a workshop introducing you to Powertex and fabric sculpting!

You will learn all the basic techniques to get your creative journey started. You will learn how to cover different fabrics in Powertex, how to work in layers and use texture to create effects. You will also learn how to use the drybrushing technique and use mica powders with a binder to colour your work. Each notebook/sketchbook turns out totally unique.

You will create your very own A5 personalised lined notebook or art journal in this lovely workshop. There are lots of different themes to choose from to truly make your book unique! The products are all very easy to use and suitable for all ages and abilities. So whether you are new to Powertex or want to refresh your knowledge if you’ve not used it for a while, come along and join us.

Additional information:

All materials included - Materials include books, fabrics, clay embellishments and mdf pieces (you are welcome to bring any small additional items to further personalise your book).

Please wear old clothes to the workshops as Powertex paint will absorb into clothing and will harden it. Powertex is made from a natural polymer, water based, non-toxic and environmentally friendly. It is a glue, hardener, paint and weatherproofing agent all in one product.

🎨 “This is actually really mindful…”

One of the girls said this yesterday as she slowly worked watercolour across one of her postcards — and it rather perfectly summed up the morning.

We had a family visiting Kirkcudbright on holiday join some of our regular Wednesday painters, and soon the table had settled into that lovely rhythm I love about these sessions: chatter and laughter mixed with quieter moments when everyone becomes completely absorbed in what’s happening at the end of their brush.

Our visitors created watercolour postcards, with me dipping in and out with gentle coaching — refining a drawing, demonstrating how to build up watercolour, figuring out a tricky colour mix or helping someone get the effect they had pictured in their head.

And everyone left with an artwork they were genuinely thrilled with. ❤️

Meanwhile, around the same table, our regulars were doing something completely different.

One was getting to grips with the fascinating (and sometimes surprising!) art of colour mixing, while another was exploring gouache and creating a beautiful interpretation of Van Gogh’s Houses at Auvers.

And that’s exactly what I want Watercolour Wednesdays to be.

You don’t all have to paint the same picture.

You can arrive as a complete beginner and I’ll help you work out where to start. Or you can keep coming back, gradually developing your skills, exploring different watercolour media and becoming more confident in the things you want to paint.

There’s guidance when you need it, conversation when you fancy it, a cuppa within reach…and plenty of time simply to sit and paint. 🎨☕

So if you’ve been thinking “I’d love to try watercolour, but I’m not good enough…”

You don’t need to be.

That’s what the class is for.

🧵 “I’d love to try patchwork… but I wouldn’t know where to start.”

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about taking a pile of individual fabric squares, arranging and rearranging them until they feel just right, and then watching them gradually become something you’ve made yourself.

But if you’ve ever looked at a beautiful quilt and wondered how on earth all those neat little pieces actually come together, this new course at The Den is a lovely place to start.

Over three Saturday mornings, Frankie will guide you through the foundations of patchwork and quilting while you create two quilted cushion covers to take home.

You’ll have time to learn the process properly — choosing and arranging your fabrics, piecing them accurately, getting comfortable with consistent seams, adding your wadding, quilting and finally turning everything into your finished cushions.

And because we’re spreading the project over three weeks, there’s no need to race to the finish. 🧵

This is designed as a beginner-friendly course, so you don’t need any previous patchwork or quilting experience. Some basic familiarity with your sewing machine will be useful, but Frankie will be there to help you along the way.

You'll need to bring a charm pack and ½ metre of coordinating fabric. We'll provide the wadding and two cushion inserts.

Bringing your own sewing machine is encouraged so you can become more confident using the machine you have at home, but we also have two machines available to borrow if you don't have one — just let us know when booking.

We're also working with Galloway Crafts & Outback Yarns in Castle Douglas on an optional fabric kit if you'd prefer a little help getting everything you need together.

🧶 YOU ASKED… AND WE LISTENED! 🧶

One of the things I love about The Den is that so much of what happens here grows directly from conversations around the tables.

Over the last few months, one request has kept popping up:

“Could you run knitting classes?”

And I'm very pleased to finally be able to say YES! 🎉

I'm absolutely delighted to have Frankie joining our programme to introduce Knitting for Beginners, with sessions for both kids and adults — including something I've been wanting to add to our timetable for a while: an evening class for grown-ups.

These relaxed, beginner-friendly sessions will focus on continental-style knitting, helping you get comfortable with the basics and build your confidence one stitch at a time.

For our younger knitters, we've added a Thursday after-school session, while adults can join us later in the evening — whether you've never held a pair of needles before, tried knitting years ago and forgotten everything, or simply fancy learning a different style.

And I'm particularly excited to start opening The Den up for more evening creative classes. I know daytime sessions simply aren't possible for everyone, and this feels like a lovely place to start. 💛

❤️ A little departure from the usual art content today, but something very close to my heart.

For the past 28 years, Adara Group has worked alongside communities in Nepal, supporting education, healthcare and community development. They are led in Nepal by an extraordinary all-local team who know these communities, work within them and, right now, are responding to the devastating floods affecting the country.

Adara works with eight schools in one of the districts affected by the flooding, and in just the past 48 hours their team has already mobilised emergency food, clean water and sanitation supplies for 1,000 people. There is a huge amount still to be done in the days and weeks ahead, and they have launched an emergency appeal to raise $500,000 AUD to support that response.

This is particularly close to my heart because my sister is the CEO of Adara Group, and hearing from her today about what their team is seeing on the ground was a reminder of just how remarkable people can be in the most awful circumstances. Communities are helping their neighbours, opening their homes, sharing what they have and looking after one another while Adara’s team works to get essential supplies to those who need them.

One of the things that makes Adara particularly special is the way the organisation is structured. Their business arm covers the core costs of running the organisation, meaning 100% of donations from supporters go directly towards project-related costs.

If you’re able to help, please consider donating to their Nepal Flood Emergency Appeal. Even a small donation contributes towards getting food, safe water and sanitation supplies where they’re needed and helping these communities begin the process of recovering and rebuilding.

And if donating isn’t possible, sharing the appeal so it reaches someone who can is just as appreciated. ❤️

🎨 SOME MEMORIES DESERVE MORE THAN A PLACE IN YOUR CAMERA ROLL…

One of the things I found myself doing while we were in Australia was collecting moments.

During a particularly busy week, when life was chaos and noise was everywhere (4 kids in the house will do that) I started creating little pen and watercolour postcards of places from my childhood — places that might not appear in a guidebook, but that hold a whole world of memories for me.

There was the brewery, just two doors down from my childhood home. The town centre, with memories of cakes from the bakery, Easter parades and strolling through the streets with my own children in their pram. The old hospital façade, where my sister got married - all places that are part of MY story. They are places I have passed through, returned to and seen change over the years.

Painting them gave me a lovely sense of calm. It encouraged me to slow down, really look at the details and spend time with the memories they carried. There was something peaceful about putting those familiar places onto paper — as though I was gently gathering up little pieces of the past and giving them somewhere to stay.

It got me thinking about how much creativity can help us preserve the meaning of ordinary places, and how the process of making can offer us a quiet space to reconnect with the things that matter.

So that idea has become the starting point for our next block of Crafting Connections.

Across the seven weeks between summer and October Half Term, we’ll be exploring places, journeys, memories and the little details we don’t want to forget — through lots of different materials and approaches.

We’ll paint, draw, collage, stitch and experiment with mixed media. We’ll look at landscapes in different ways, turn memories into colour, give collected scraps and keepsakes a new life and spend some time noticing the ordinary things that carry surprisingly big stories.

And you absolutely do not need to have been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday to take part.

Your inspiration might come from international holidays… or it might be a favourite beach in D&G, your grandmother’s garden, a walk you take every week, an old family photograph or somewhere you haven’t visited for twenty years but can still picture perfectly.

Because really, this block isn’t about travel.

It’s about the places and moments we carry with us — especially the ordinary ones that mean far more than anyone else might realise. 💛

🎨 A NEW SCHOOL TERM MEANS A BRAND NEW SCHEDULE OF CREATIVITY IN THE DEN! 🎨

We’re so excited to welcome young makers back for another term full of colour, imagination, and hands-on creativity! One of the things I really wanted from this programme was to give children *lots of different ways* to be creative — so there’s something here for every kind of young artist.

Some children love to paint and make in the moment. Some want to get completely lost in a bigger, ongoing project. Others are happiest with fabric, yarn and stitching. And our youngest creatives? They just want to explore *everything* and see where their curiosity takes them! 💛

So here’s what’s happening each week in The Den:

🎨 **MONDAY | 10–11am — Little Art Play**
For little people not yet at school and their grown-ups.
Each week is a gentle, joyful mix of stories, music, rhymes and creative play — with paint, glue, colour and imagination leading the way. A lovely, relaxed start to the week.
💷 £3 first child | £1 siblings

🧵 **MONDAY | 4–5pm — Kids Sewing Club**
This term we’re diving into the world of patchwork!
Children are learning real sewing skills while creating colourful, personal pieces full of character and creativity.
✨ **Only ONE space left — get in touch if you’d like it!**

🎨 **TUESDAY | 3:45–4:45pm — Mini Makers**
A brand new creative adventure every week! One week we might be painting big and bold, the next building sculptures, experimenting with textiles, or trying out mixed media magic.
Expect busy hands, bright ideas and lots of “can we do this again next week?” energy!

🖌️ **WEDNESDAY | 3:45–4:45pm — Kids Project Club**
For children who love to really *go for it*. This is where ideas grow over time — we take on bigger, more ambitious projects and develop skills week by week, with space to experiment, refine and be proud of what they create.

🧶 **FRIDAY | 3:45–4:45pm — Kids Crochet Class**
A calm, friendly weekly session with Heather, perfect for learning and building crochet skills step by step. A lovely space for focus, patience and making something beautiful with yarn.

Whether your child is into **painting, building, sewing, drawing, experimenting or working with yarn**, there’s a place for them at the table — and we’d absolutely love to welcome them in. 💛

✈️ Some goodbyes are harder than others…

I’ve been really quiet on here lately, mostly because I’ve been soaking up every last minute of our time with family in Australia.

Whilst I’ve been away, things at The Little Art Den have been ticking along quietly, with some amazing sessions led by my team in my absence. I can never thank these wonderful girls enough for the hard work, care and commitment they’ve put into keeping my little space running over the last six weeks. Knowing The Den was in such safe hands meant I could be properly present here with my family, and that has meant more than I can say. 💛

Right now, though, I’m sitting in Sydney Airport trying not to dwell too much on the “see you later” we’ve just had with my beautiful family, who enveloped us in hugs and love before we walked through departures.

It’s a big mix of emotions.

We’re all incredibly sad to be leaving, but also oh-so-excited to get home and see Mr Little Art Den, who couldn’t join us on this adventure. ❤️

And I think we’re ready for home. For our little corner of Scotland. For our own beds, familiar faces and getting ourselves back into some kind of routine again.

For me, that also means getting back into The Den. 🎨

I’ll be in this week getting everything back to normal and preparing for classes to return from Monday 24th August, with lots of new classes, projects and sessions planned for the new school term and beyond. If you’re passing, be sure to pop in and say hello!

Most classes are already online and ready to book, including our after-school programme, and some classes have limited spaces available - don’t leave it too late to book!
