Learning Cente
We have all had a fantastic first week back. We have enjoyed playing lots of turn taking games and learning through play.
Our core word of the week is ‘I like’. We have explored this through a range of activities including lots of messy play.
Everyone has settled back into our routines and had lots of fun!
Nursery
In nursery this week, we have been getting to know all the new children that have started with us and reconnecting with our friends that we haven’t seen over the Summer. We have been getting back into the swing of our routines, and the children have particularly enjoyed having snack where they help themselves to what is available and when they’re finished they tidy up after themselves.

Primary 1-2
P1-2 have had a fantastic first week back. The children have been working hard and getting to know our class routines. They are becoming more independent and confident each day. We’ve enjoyed lots of learning though play, alongside our teacher-led learning activities. I am so proud of how great everyone is settling in!

Primary 2-3
This week we have been exploring the p2/3 classroom and getting to know each other better. We have been to the woods, got messy in a STEM challenge, junk modelling in science, while learning about solar energy. Made rose hip syrup to practice our note taking skills and think about different types of medicine in H&WB. We have also been exploring topical news in social studies - we discovered Tako, the piano-playing octopus!

We will be heading to Kirkcudbright Gallery on Monday 21st September, as we will need to be there by 1pm we will have a school pack lunch – and a school one will be provided unless you would like to bring your own.
Primary 3-4
We have had an exciting first week in Primary 3/4! We started the week by creating our Classroom Charter. Together, we discussed our class values and agreed on how we can show kindness, respect, creativity, inclusion and ambition in our classroom every day.
We have also been getting ready for our Flower Show entries. We have been brushing up on our handwriting and thinking about the theme of ‘Treasure’. The children have been choosing special objects that are important to them and writing about them using our description bubbles. We also enjoyed writing about our weekend news and sharing our experiences with the class.
In PE, we had lots of fun taking part in team building games. These activities help us practise our communication, listening and teamwork skills.
In Maths, we have been revisiting our number bonds to 20 and developing our understanding of numbers up to 1000. We also introduced some fun card games to help us practice these skills while having lots of fun!
We have also been enjoying some creative learning with Miss McCleman. As part of science topic on Energy, we have been exploring hot colours, colour mixing and how to create colour gradient. The children have produced some fantastic artwork while developing their understanding of colour.
Primary 4-5
We have been exploring the artist Steven Brown and made our own McCoo’s.
We started our class novel and thought about items we would take with us for a long trip at sea - looking forward to reading more!
Millie enjoyed learning about the 7 different continents in science.
Olivia S and Poppy enjoyed exploring colour whilst making McCoo’s.
Beth enjoyed making class birthday cards and is excited to receive one.
Primary 5
P5 have had a great start to the year and settled in well to the routines of school again! In maths, we have been revising the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables and building on speed and accuracy. Keep practising! In Literacy, we have started a block of creative writing linked to superheroes. This week, we explored the importance of good characters in stories.
We have also been preparing for the Kirkcudbright flower show. We have entered the handwriting and art competitions. This year’s focus for the art is Scottish Wildlife.

Miss Wright got married in the summer holidays and is now Mrs Kellett!
Alfie took part in a football tournament for St Cuthberts in the holidays.
Hamish won various tennis competitions over the summer holidays.
Fergus won a golf competition at the weekend! Well done everyone!

Primary 6G
We have been learning about the internal structure of the Earth.
We looked at the artwork of Mondrian and created our own work in his style.
We have been using Adobe Express to create infographics about ourselves.
Olivia – “I thought it was interesting how the crust is the outer layer of the Earth like a crust on bread.”
Mirren – “I did a turtle in my Mondrian art. I have a pet tortoise.”
Sam – “I enjoyed using AI to create my bobblehead image. I included my cat too.”

Grace, Martha, Sam, Jake, Finlay and Lily all took part in the parade.
Grace is dancing at the tattoo.
KC has a yellow belt in Taekwondo.
Olivia made herself a pair of leggings.
Aria got player of the match and scored 12 goals last week when she played for Threave girls.

Primary 6KB
We are all enjoying being back at school. We are looking forward to learning lots of new things in P6.
we have enjoyed playing rounders in PE. We’re working on our flower show artwork, drawing pictures of Kirkcudbright. We have been thinking about our goals for the year, and we have been thinking about the ‘Superpowers’ we already have - we’ve turned ourselves into superheroes.

WARM WEATHER UPDATE:

Children are welcome to wear shorts or lightweight clothing instead of their standard uniform. (Please remember that football club strips are not permitted.)

We also kindly ask that you send your child to school with a refillable water bottle, a sun hat, and pre-applied sunscreen.

At the end of this term, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs McMillan and Mrs Phillip as they retire after an incredible combined 81 years of teaching. Mrs McMillan began her teaching career in 1985 and Mrs Phillip in 1986 with Dumfries and Galloway Council.

We would like to thank them both for their years of hard work, care, and dedication to the children, families, and wider community of Kirkcudbright Primary School.

If any parents, former pupils, families, or members of the community would like to contribute towards a retirement collection, donations can be handed in to the school office by Friday 26th June. We wish Mrs McMillan and Mrs Phillip a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.

Learning Centre
The Learning Centre had a fantastic afternoon for our end of term bouncy castle session. We enjoyed playing together and everyone had lots of fun!

Nursery
Last Friday, we had our celebration day for Scotland playing in the football World Cup. We had a Scottish snack, played Beat the Goalie and sang some Scottish songs and rhymes. This week, the children starting school in August have been up to the school dinner hall for their lunch so they can see what it will be like when they’re in P1. We also had our water play afternoon this week when the sun was shining and everyone had great fun.
“We were having fun with the water balloons. I was trying to squish mine, but it didn’t pop,” said Innes.
“I was holding my balloon, and it popped and I got wet,” said Lea.
Primary 1
Primary 2
Everyone had a very exciting trip to the fish factory. We learned all about how the scallops are cleaned, packaged and shipped. And could apply and extend lots of our topic learning.

Primary 3-4
On Tuesday, we visited the fish factory as part of our topic on fishing. We learned lots, watched the scallops being processed and even went inside a giant freezer!

Primary 4
This week, we have been incredibly creative, making our Great Barrier Reef dioramas! We have had great fun, using a variety of resources to create coral and marine life. We are looking forward to displaying them at our assembly next week. We have enjoyed writing our own imaginative stories, linked to the Ocean.
In science, we have been exploring the water cycle.
WIDER ACHIEVEMENTS
Hamish and Fergus won a Tennis competition at the weekend! They managed to win all their singles and doubles matches! Well done!
REMINDERS
Our First Level assembly is on Thursday at 1.45pm. We will be selling raffle tickets and selling items we have made to raise money for Fleet Inshore Rescue service.
Primary 5
This week, one of our rotation activities was called “20 Minutes vs 1000 Pieces of Kapla!”. We worked in teams of 6-7 to build the tallest tower possible using Kapla blocks. We had to communicate well, work together, and think carefully about how to make our structures strong enough to stay standing. There was some great teamwork on display!
Monday was Project Hand-In Day, and everyone presented their work either to a small group or to the whole class. We were very proud to invite the P1 class to come and view our projects, and we enjoyed showing them around. We think they were impressed! Afterwards, we each wrote a quiz question based on our project and then took part in a huge World Cup Quiz with the whole class.
In PE with Mrs Pearsall, we played non-stop cricket. We practised our batting, fielding and teamwork skills and had lots of fun.
Mrs Summers certainly worked us hard in PE on Monday! We completed a range of fitness stations that targeted different parts of the body. There was a lot of sweat flying around the gym!
We have also continued to fill in our World Cup predictions. We earn 5 points for predicting one correct score in a match and 10 points for predicting both scores correctly. We watched part of the Scotland match together (the best part!) and really enjoyed cheering them on as a class.

Amy, Elsie and Hollie received a Gold Award at Brownies.
Lily came 1st place in all of her swimming club championship races.
Alba fixed a puncture on her bike with her dad.
Jaiden achieved a hole in one in golf.
Noah helped his golf team beat Gatehouse and CD in the Golf Sixes competition.
Martha has her dance shows this week – good luck, Martha!
Alex’s football team, the Saints, beat Heston Rovers 2-1.
William learned how to do a drift on his bike.

We enjoyed our mini World Cup tournament with P7. We were put in teams and given a country name.
We wrote a story about ‘The Day I Played for Scotland’.
We used Adobe Express to create a fact file about a Scotland squad player of our choice.
Amy – “I was in the Morocco team. I had great fun! We won and Oscar scored a hat-trick!”
Xi Yu – “We had to write about what we would see and hear and about how we would feel.”
Oscar – “I did my fact file about Findlay Curtis because he is my favourite player.”

Primary 7
P7 have enjoyed their final full week of primary school and ended with a special ‘Fun Day’. In the morning, they decorated their own bags and had a run through of our Leavers Assembly. After break, a trip to the swimming pool for a ‘pool party’ and then in the afternoon, they glammed up for a Silent Disco, with all songs chosen by themselves. This was a great way to finish before spending a whole week at the Academy next week! Good luck everyone. I hope you all have an amazing time and I look forward to hearing all about it!

REMINDER... Kirkcudbright Primary & Nursery Parent Council will be hosting a 'Shorts and Shades' DISCO on Thursday 18th June. If your child is attending, please complete the MS Form.

Kirkcudbright Primary School and Nursery Parent Council will be hosting a Summer 'Shorts and Shades' Disco on Thursday 18th June, in the school hall. For Nursery Pre-School Children and Primary 1 - 3 children, the disco will be from 5.30pm until 6.15pm. For Primary 4 - 7 children, it will be from 6.30pm - 7.30pm.

Please complete the MS Form to confirm your child's attendance. Complete a separate form for each child.

We are delighted to be awarded a Silver School Sport Award from Sport Scotland.

This recognises the strength of our partnership with Stewartry Active Schools and Community Sport, in particular Erin, who is our Sport Officer. It also recognises the dedication of staff to providing quality sporting experiences to learners, as part of their curriculum and opportunities for wider achievement.

Nursery, P1, P2, P3/4 and P4 enjoyed excellent Tennis Coaching Sessions. These sessions were organised by Kirkcudbright Community Tennis Club and delivered by Coach Ryan. We are very thankful for this great opportunity and we appreciate our link with the local tennis club.

Learning Centre
This week we have enjoyed play based learning opportunities particularly when exploring our ‘People Who Help Us’ topic all about firefighters.
We have been focusing on further developing our turn taking skills and fine motor skills. This has been through messy play, sensory play, playing games and jigsaws. We have continued to explore new sounds this week for phonics looking at ‘e’. As well as exploring our core words of the week ‘some’ and ‘different’.
Nursery
It’s been another busy week in nursery. We have been talking about the World Cup starting and have been looking at maps to see where the games are being played. We also used papier mache to make a globe which we painted to show the land and the sea. We painted the windows with Saltires and made lots of blue and white paper chains and flags to decorate the nursery.
Primary 1
Another WOW Wednesday with p1 joining p2+p3 at the Galloway Games on our grassy area. It was lovely to see our friends from other schools and try some new activities like archery, tossing the caber and welly throwing!
WIDER ACHIEVEMENTS
Lily was a flower girl at her mum and dad’s wedding. She had to make sure that her mum’s dress was nice.
Seth took part in the Steampunk parade! He had to plan his outfit for a long time.
Rory, Jonty and Harry took part in the Saints Fun Day. Jonty and Harry had to hand out trophies. Rory got a trophy.
Emilia found a clam shell at the beach and took it home where it opened up in a tub of water.
Primary 2
P2 has learned all about a salmon’s life cycle and its struggle to reproduce. They have also learned about salmon food chains.
Primary 3-4
On Thursday this week we went to Ellisland Farm where Robert Burns wrote Auld Lang Syne, and also to Drumlanrig Castle Adventure Playground. It rained for the 1st part of the day but luckily, it went off for most of the afternoon! We had a great time learning a bit about where Robert Bunrs was a farmer with his wife, Jean Armour, and where he was also an exciseman for a while. We had a fantastic time at Drumlanrig and enjoyed the playground. We took a walk in the grounds and saw the gardens. It was a great day!

Primary 4
P4 have had a busy week with visits and visitors!
On Tuesday, we went to the West Coast Sea Products Fish Factory. We learned all about the food journey from when they arrive at the factory, to how the King and Queen scallops get exported to Europe. We were amazed with the machines there, but not so keen on the smell!
On Wednesday, Keith from RNLI came in to talk about the role the RNLI have in the local community. He also reinforced the importance of water safety!
On Thursday, we enjoyed our trip with p3/4 to Ellisland and Drumlanrig.

Thomas planted 8 trees with Johnston Nursery at St Mary’s Isle on Monday.

Primary 5
This week in maths, we practised multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000 and 10000. We worked with both whole numbers and decimal numbers. On Monday, we took part in an orienteering activity around the school grounds, where we had to find and answer maths questions. We also created a ‘hack sheet’ with place value columns to help us if we got stuck. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a game of dodgeball with Mrs Pearsall and completed some beautiful mandala artwork.
In ICT, we researched a country taking part in the World Cup. It was a lucky dip so we didn't know which country we would get! We had to find 10 facts about our country and include relevant pictures to match the information we found.
In science, we designed and made paper darts and parachutes. We then tested them and measured how far they travelled in metres.
In French, we have been creating and playing our own French board games.
We are also being given more independence when using the computers, which we have enjoyed.
As part of our RSHP learning this week, we explored discrimination and prejudice. We learned about the lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks and listened to Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. We also discussed what it means to be transgender.
We have continued our World Cup topic and have decided that we will watch the Scotland matches in class during the afternoons as a special end of term treat. So don't worry if you can't stay up late to watch the games, we'll be following them together in school! We have also made predictions with our football partners. For every correct score prediction, we earn house points.
WIDER ACHIEVEMENTS
Well done to our swimmers this week! Maisie swam 10 lengths, Amelia won a mini swimming competition after swimming 7 lengths, Charlotte achieved 1st place in both butterfly and backstroke events, and Amy is becoming much braver swimming in the deep end.
Good luck to Ellis, Mirren and Maisie, who are taking part in Highland Dancing next weekend. Martha is also busy preparing for her dance show.
Noah received a medal at a football tournament in Girvan. William scored a goal at football practice, Jaiden beat his sister 20-0 at football and Murray enjoyed victories over both his brother and dad at FIFA.
Congratulations to Libby, who won a gold medal at gymnastics competition in Edinburgh. Oliver also mastered a 180 on his bike.
Ellis and Penny are learning a new song on the violin, while Isla has finished her favourite Horrid Henry book.
Craig has recently taken up pool, Hollie bravely held a massive spider, and Alba has been finding her inner zen and staying calmer with her brothers.
A special mention goes to Elsie for being such a great help at home, even managing to change her little brother's pull-up!

Primary 5-6
We’ve been learning about what children need to be healthy, happy and safe. We found a novel way to record our findings! As part of our science topic, we have been learning about the curled octopus. We learned about its habitat, its prey and how it protects itself from danger.

Primary 6
We used Roy Lichtenstein’s Pop Art style to create our own football pop art.
We enjoyed looking at each other’s homework projects and providing peer feedback. Everyone did a project about one of the countries involved in the World Cup.
We found out about different careers in football like stadium, safety engineers, fabric technologists and sport turf technician.
Aylah – “I liked doing the football pop art and I was proud of how it looked when it finished!”
Ellie – “I enjoyed finding out about Canada, my mum made pancakes and I brought them in to share with maple syrup / honey.”
Leo – “I would like to have some sort of career in football.”

Freya went to a Highland dancing competition and got two 3rd, one 4th, one 5th and one 7th.
Leo and Oscar took part in a football competition in Carlisle and Leo saved two penalties.
Aylah got a new bunny called Maisie!
Mathew got MOTM in football tournament at Girvan.

Primary 7

This week in primary 7, we were learning about Mathematics and how it affects our everyday life and other situations that involve maths.
We took part in a live stream of ’We’re Aff Tae the Big School’. This was all about transition to the Academy. We had fun and there were messages from famous people.
We made posters for our World Cup teams which included information on that country like the traditions and the food.
