Small world play is a way for children to show what they are learning by imitation. They can show knowledge of the world around them in a creative way. It's a lovely way for children to explore new and confusing ideas and work them out on their own or with the help of friends.

Small world play helps children develop their imagination and opens them to a new world of fictional play where they can explore different concepts and engage in role-play based activities.

Christmas is a great theme for small world play. A tray with characters created from toilet roll tubes is a good way to start. Shredded coconut and cotton wool make great imitation snow. Tin foil could be used as ice. Watch imaginations go wild!

What's says Christmas more than home-made wrapping paper?! Let your child get creative with some blank paper, paint, cookie cutters, sponges, their hands and feet or any other household item to make their own gift wrap.

A child's motor skills are best developed through repeating natural actions that come about through everyday activities. A great activity for this is baking. Pouring liquids needs careful hand and eye coordination and kneading dough strengthens muscles. Whipping, creaming and rubbing in all use different movements and muscle groups. A baking session makes an excellent work out!

Healthy snacks are important for a balanced, varied diet. At nursery we are supported by the Scottish Milk & Healthy Snack Scheme to make sure that every child is given high quality dairy produce and fruit and vegetables from an early age. We also make our own snacks at nursery. The children enjoy buying and preparing the ingredients, cooking and baking, and of course eating their snacks.

Got some paint, paper and toy cars at home? Here is an easy process are and sensory activity for pre-school children. Put some blank paper on the floor with some trays of paint then drive the cars through the paint and on to the paper. The car tyres make interesting patterns and children can learn about colour mixing as the cars move between colours. After that, set up a tub with some water, washing up liquid and old cloths etc. to be a carwash for cleaning the cars.
