We had a wonderful camp in the New Forest this week, with the Year 7 pupils from Salisbury Cathedral School. Despite the heat, they had lots of fun hiking, mountain biking, paddle boarding, practicing bushcraft and cooking their own food on Dutch ovens. Well done everyone!

One of our aims is to help as many young people as possible get out and have adventures. Covid-19 hasn't stopped us, and only highlighted how important it is to give people the opportunity to discover new places and experiences.

This week, we saw Year 8 pupils from Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School discover the beautiful Nidderdale in North Yorkshire. They were all amazing, an absolute credit to the school. They had so much fun during the activities, but also fully appreciated the chance to be with their friends and socialise in a more open environment.

Well done Year 8. You were awesome!

This week saw our first school camp of 2021! The children were wonderful and really appreciated their BBQ after their adventures at Sherwood Pines. Let's hope it was the last wet BBQ of 2021 too!

Our adventures often take us over the hills and mountains of the UK. We sometimes manage to find trig points, height markers traditionally used to measure height. But where do they measure the base height from? This wonderful article tells us...

The building was used to determine mean sea level and, from that, heights across the UK.

Our sector is struggling, in a similar way to a lot of other leisure and recreation sectors. There is currently no cure and it is highly likely that some businesses will be lost. More importantly, there are thousands of dedicated outdoor instructors who are really struggling or have already sought work in other industries. For some, this will be a temporary move; for others it will be permanent.

The majority of our work is based on overnight stays, which are currently not allowed in the UK. Until this changes, there is no light at the end of the tunnel and it will take quite a few years for outdoor education to recover. We were already working in an environment where schools and parents were looking after every penny. Despite the known value of outdoor education, it was becoming increasingly more difficult to prioritise this with so many other pressures.

To all our wonderful schools and parents, please can you help by:

* Whilst we are not able to provide our full range of courses, take every opportunity to let our younger generations explore and discover as much as you can. Go on as many adventures as possible within the rules which are currently in place.

* Plan their next adventure. Talk to your children and young people about what they would like to do and where they would like to go. There are many books all about adventures aimed at all ages. Give them some inspiration!

* Plan your next adventure. We are more than happy to take bookings for 2021 and beyond. We are also not requiring a deposit for any bookings until we 100% know a course will run.

* Remember the places where adventures were made and who were fair when the adventures couldn't happen. We refunded ALL our customers deposits or balances within 5 days of a request being made, for any reason. Not all providers did this. Schools and parents should not have lost out, just so that a business could keep going. Talk about all the great places... and the not so great.

* Please get in touch if you would like free advice on what can be done during the current situation (not all our courses have stopped!). We are also more than happy to help plan for when things get closer to normal. We don't do everything, but we know some amazing places to go if we don't offer what you are looking for.

To all our instructors:

Please don't struggle. We will help wherever we can. We can't recover without your help and support, so please let us know how we can help you now.

As September draws closer, we are looking forward to the slightly different courses we will be running with schools in the next few months.

In the meantime, equipment needs servicing and sorting. Today we received a lovely delivery from Billygoats & Raincoats. They have done a great job in making some drawstring bags for some of our older tents using recycled material.

We would really appreciate it if you could help us show our thanks by visiting their page. They make some incredible things using fabrics recycled from discarded tents at festivals.

We understand that schools and parents are always needing to look after the pennies.

Our tailor made residentials can include a night under the stars in a national park - weather permitting. But our top priority is providing the best learning experience for your children at great value for money.

Please get in touch to find out more. We'll even come to your school for a free consultation to better understand your requirements.
